The tool pointer (to a struct largely of function pointers) is passed
around but is unchanged except at initialization. Change parameter and
variable types to be const to lower the possibilities of what could
happen with a tool.

Currently it's only possible to initialize with the default number of
queues and then use auxtrace_queues__add_event() to grow the array.
But that's problematic if you don't have a real event to pass into that
function yet.
The queues hold a void *priv member to store custom state, and for
Coresight we want to create decoders upfront before receiving data, so
add a new function that allows pre-allocating queues.
One reason to do this is because we might need to store metadata (HW_ID
events) that effects other queues, but never actually receive auxtrace
data on that queue.

Add reference count checking to struct dso, this can help with
implementing correct reference counting discipline. To avoid
RC_CHK_ACCESS everywhere, add accessor functions for the variables in

The majority of the change is mechanical in nature and not easy to

If the --itrace option is used more than once, the options are
combined, but "i" and "y" (sub-)options can be corrupted because
itrace_do_parse_synth_opts() incorrectly overwrites the period type and
period with default values.
For example, with:
--itrace=i0ns --itrace=e
The processing of "--itrace=e", resets the "i" period from 0 nanoseconds
to the default 100 microseconds.
Fix by performing the default setting of period type and period only if
"i" or "y" are present in the currently processed --itrace value.

perf_cpu_map__has_any_cpu_or_is_empty()
The name perf_cpu_map_empty is misleading as true is also returned
when the map contains an "any" CPU (aka dummy) map.
Rename to perf_cpu_map__has_any_cpu_or_is_empty(), later changes will
(re)introduce perf_cpu_map__empty() and perf_cpu_map__has_any_cpu().

An AUX trace can contain timestamp, but in some situations, the hardware
trace module (e.g. Arm CoreSight) cannot decide the traced timestamp is
the same source with CPU's time, thus the decoder can not use the
timestamp trace for samples.
This patch introduces 'T' itrace option. If users know the platforms
they are working on have the same time counter with CPUs, users can
use this new option to tell a decoder for using timestamp trace as
kernel time.

Later changes will add reference count checking for struct map, with
dso being the most frequently accessed variable. Add an accessor so
that the reference count check is only necessary in one place.
Additional changes:
- add a dso variable to avoid repeated map__dso calls.
- in builtin-mem.c dump_raw_samples, code only partially tested for
dso == NULL. Make the possibility of NULL consistent.
- in thread.c thread__memcpy fix use of spaces and use tabs.

There is no good reason why we cannot synthesize "cycle" events from
Intel PT just as we can synthesize "instruction" events, in particular
when CYC packets are available. This enables using PT to getting much
more accurate cycle profiles than regular sampling (record -e cycles)
when the work last for very short periods (<10 ms). Thus, add support
for this, based off of the existing IPC calculation framework. The new
option to --itrace is "y" (for cYcles), as c was taken for calls. Cycle
and instruction events can be synthesized together, and are by default.
The only real caveat is that CYC packets are only emitted whenever some
other packet is, which in practice is when a branch instruction is
encountered (and not even all branches). Thus, even at no subsampling
(e.g. --itrace=y0ns), it is impossible to get more accuracy than a
single basic block, and all cycles spent executing that block will get
attributed to the branch instruction that ends the packet. Thus, one
cannot know whether the cycles came from e.g. a specific load, a
mispredicted branch, or something else. When subsampling (which is the
default), the cycle events will get smeared out even more, but will
still be generally useful to attribute cycle counts to functions.

the PTT packet described in Documentation/trace/hisi-ptt.rst. And the
fields of each packet can be further decoded following the PCIe Spec's
definition of TLP packet.

Add flag +e to the itrace d (decoder debug log) option to get output only
on decoding errors.
The log can be very big so reducing the output to where there are decoding
errors can be useful for analyzing errors.
By default, the log size in that case is 16384 bytes, but can be altered by
perf config e.g. perf config itrace.debug-log-buffer-size=30000

Currently an auxtrace mmap is always attempted even if the event is not an

evlist contains cpus and all_cpus. all_cpus is the union of the cpu maps
of all evsels.
For non-task targets, cpus is set to be cpus requested from the command
line, defaulting to all online cpus if no cpus are specified.
For an uncore event, all_cpus may be just CPU 0 or every online CPU.
This causes all_cpus to have fewer values than the cpus variable which
is confusing given the 'all' in the name.
To try to make the behavior clearer, rename cpus to user_requested_cpus
and add comments on the two struct variables.

A common problem is confusing CPU map indices with the CPU, by wrapping
the CPU with a struct then this is avoided. This approach is similar to
atomic_t.
Committer notes:
To make it build with BUILD_BPF_SKEL=1 these files needed the
conversions to 'struct perf_cpu' usage:
tools/perf/util/bpf_counter.c
tools/perf/util/bpf_counter_cgroup.c
tools/perf/util/bpf_ftrace.c
Also perf_env__get_cpu() was removed back in "perf cpumap: Switch
cpu_map__build_map to cpu function".
Additionally these needed to be fixed for the ARM builds to complete:
tools/perf/arch/arm/util/cs-etm.c
tools/perf/arch/arm64/util/pmu.c

When perf runs in compat mode (kernel in 64-bit mode and the perf is in
32-bit mode), the 64-bit value atomicity in the user space cannot be
assured, E.g. on some architectures, the 64-bit value accessing is split
into two instructions, one is for the low 32-bit word accessing and
another is for the high 32-bit word.
This patch introduces weak functions compat_auxtrace_mmap__read_head()
and compat_auxtrace_mmap__write_tail(), as their naming indicates, when
perf tool works in compat mode, it uses these two functions to access
the AUX head and tail. These two functions can allow the perf tool to
work properly in certain conditions, e.g. when perf tool works in
snapshot mode with only using AUX head pointer, or perf tool uses the
AUX buffer and the incremented tail is not bigger than 4GB.
When perf tool cannot handle the case when the AUX tail is bigger than
4GB, the function compat_auxtrace_mmap__write_tail() returns -1 and
tells the caller to bail out for the error.
These two functions are declared as weak attribute, this allows to
implement arch specific functions if any arch can support the 64-bit
value atomicity in compat mode.

Since the function auxtrace_mmap__read_snapshot_head() is exactly same
with auxtrace_mmap__read_head(), whether the session is in snapshot mode

Move evsel::leader to perf_evsel::leader, so we can move the group
interface to libperf.
Also add several evsel helpers to ease up the transition:
struct evsel *evsel__leader(struct evsel *evsel);
- get leader evsel
bool evsel__has_leader(struct evsel *evsel, struct evsel *leader);
- true if evsel has leader as leader
bool evsel__is_leader(struct evsel *evsel);
- true if evsel is itw own leader
void evsel__set_leader(struct evsel *evsel, struct evsel *leader);
- set leader for evsel
Committer notes:
Fix this when building with 'make BUILD_BPF_SKEL=1'
tools/perf/util/bpf_counter.c
- if (evsel->leader->core.nr_members > 1) {
+ if (evsel->core.leader->nr_members > 1) {

In the function auxtrace_parse_snapshot_options(), the callback pointer
"itr->parse_snapshot_options" can be NULL if it has not been set during
the AUX record initialization. This can cause tool crashing if the
callback pointer "itr->parse_snapshot_options" is dereferenced without
performing NULL check.
Add a NULL check for the pointer "itr->parse_snapshot_options" before
invoke the callback.

The only requirement of an auxtrace queue is that the buffers are in
time order. That is achieved by making separate queues for separate
perf buffer or AUX area buffer mmaps.
That generally means a separate queue per cpu for per-cpu contexts, and
a separate queue per thread for per-task contexts.
When buffers are added to a queue, perf checks that the buffer cpu and
thread id (tid) match the queue cpu and thread id.
However, generally, that need not be true, and perf will queue buffers
correctly anyway, so the check is not needed.
In addition, the check gets erroneously hit when using sample mode to
trace multiple threads.
Consequently, fix that case by removing the check.

aux-output events need to have an AUX area event as the group leader.
However, grouping events does not allow the AUX area event to be given
an address filter because the --filter option must come after the event,
which conflicts with the grouping syntax.
To allow filtering in that case, automatically create a group since that
is the requirement anyway.
Example: (requires Intel Tremont)
perf record -c 500 -e 'intel_pt//u' --filter 'filter main @ /bin/ls' -e 'cycles/aux-output/pp' ls
