First part of "net: Make timestamping selectable" from Kory Maincent. Change the driver-facing type already to lower rebasing pain. Link: https://lore.kernel.org/20240709-feature_ptp_netnext-v17-0-b5317f50df2a@bootlin.com/ Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org>
2024-07-15net: Add struct kernel_ethtool_ts_infoKory Maincent
In prevision to add new UAPI for hwtstamp we will be limited to the struct ethtool_ts_info that is currently passed in fixed binary format through the ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO ethtool ioctl. It would be good if new kernel code already started operating on an extensible kernel variant of that structure, similar in concept to struct kernel_hwtstamp_config vs struct hwtstamp_config. Since struct ethtool_ts_info is in include/uapi/linux/ethtool.h, here we introduce the kernel-only structure in include/linux/ethtool.h. The manual copy is then made in the function called by ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO. 2024-07-12net: ethtool: let drivers declare max size of RSS indir table and keyJakub Kicinski
Some drivers (bnxt but I think also mlx5 from ML discussions) change the size of the indirection table depending on the number of Rx rings. Decouple the max table size from the size of the currently used table, so that we can reserve space in the context for table growth. Static members in ethtool_ops are good enough for now, we can add callbacks to read the max size more dynamically if someone needs that. 2024-07-11net: ethtool: Fix RSS settingSaeed Mahameed
When user submits a rxfh set command without touching XFRM_SYM_XOR, rxfh.input_xfrm is set to RXH_XFRM_NO_CHANGE, which is equal to 0xff. Testing if (rxfh.input_xfrm & RXH_XFRM_SYM_XOR && !ops->cap_rss_sym_xor_supported) return -EOPNOTSUPP; Will always be true on devices that don't set cap_rss_sym_xor_supported, since rxfh.input_xfrm & RXH_XFRM_SYM_XOR is always true, if input_xfrm was not set, i.e RXH_XFRM_NO_CHANGE=0xff, which will result in failure of any command that doesn't require any change of XFRM, e.g RSS context or hash function changes. To avoid this breakage, test if rxfh.input_xfrm != RXH_XFRM_NO_CHANGE before testing other conditions. Note that the problem will only trigger with XFRM-aware userspace, old ethtool CLI would continue to work. 2024-07-11ethtool: fail closed if we can't get max channel used in indirection tablesJakub Kicinski
Commit 0d1b7d6c9274 ("bnxt: fix crashes when reducing ring count with active RSS contexts") proves that allowing indirection table to contain channels with out of bounds IDs may lead to crashes. Currently the max channel check in the core gets skipped if driver can't fetch the indirection table or when we can't allocate memory. Both of those conditions should be extremely rare but if they do happen we should try to be safe and fail the channel change. 2024-07-03net: ethtool: fix compat with old RSS context APIJakub Kicinski
Device driver gets access to rxfh_dev, while rxfh is just a local copy of user space params. We need to check what RSS context ID driver assigned in rxfh_dev, not rxfh. Using rxfh leads to trying to store all contexts at index 0xffffffff. From the user perspective it leads to "driver chose duplicate ID" warnings when second context is added and inability to access any contexts even tho they were successfully created - xa_load() for the actual context ID will return NULL, and syscall will return -ENOENT. Looks like a rebasing mistake, since rxfh_dev was added relatively recently by commit fb6e30a72539 ("net: ethtool: pass a pointer to parameters to get/set_rxfh ethtool ops"). 2024-06-28ethtool: Veto some operations during firmware flashing processDanielle Ratson
Some operations cannot be performed during the firmware flashing process. For example: - Port must be down during the whole flashing process to avoid packet loss while committing reset for example. - Writing to EEPROM interrupts the flashing process, so operations like ethtool dump, module reset, get and set power mode should be vetoed. - Split port firmware flashing should be vetoed. 2024-01-02net: ethtool: Fix symmetric-xor RSS RX flow hash checkGerhard Engleder
Commit 13e59344fb9d ("net: ethtool: add support for symmetric-xor RSS hash") adds a check to the ethtool set_rxnfc operation, which checks the RX flow hash if the flag RXH_XFRM_SYM_XOR is set. This flag is introduced with the same commit. It calls the ethtool get_rxfh operation to get the RX flow hash data. If get_rxfh is not supported, then EOPNOTSUPP is returned. There are driver like tsnep, macb, asp2, genet, gianfar, mtk, ... which support the ethtool operation set_rxnfc but not get_rxfh. This results in EOPNOTSUPP returned by ethtool_set_rxnfc() without actually calling the ethtool operation set_rxnfc. Thus, set_rxnfc got broken for all these drivers. Check RX flow hash in ethtool_set_rxnfc() only if driver supports RX flow hash. Symmetric RSS hash functions are beneficial in applications that monitor both Tx and Rx packets of the same flow (IDS, software firewalls, ..etc). There are multiple ways to query for the carrier state: through rtnetlink, sysfs, and (possibly) ethtool. Synchronize linkwatch work before these operations so that we don't have a situation where userspace queries the carrier state between the driver's carrier off->on transition and linkwatch running and expects it to work, when really (at least) TX cannot work until linkwatch has run. I previously posted a longer explanation of how this applies to wireless [1] but with this wireless can simply query the state before sending data, to ensure the kernel is ready for it. 2023-07-28net: ethtool: Unify ETHTOOL_{G,S}RXFH rxnfc copyJoe Damato
ETHTOOL_GRXFH correctly copies in the full struct ethtool_rxnfc when FLOW_RSS is set; ETHTOOL_SRXFH needs a similar code path to handle the FLOW_RSS case so that ethtool can set the flow hash for custom RSS contexts (if supported by the driver). The copy code from ETHTOOL_GRXFH has been pulled out in to a helper so that it can be called in both ETHTOOL_{G,S}RXFH code paths. 2023-05-03ethtool: Fix uninitialized number of lanesIdo Schimmel
It is not possible to set the number of lanes when setting link modes using the legacy IOCTL ethtool interface. Since 'struct ethtool_link_ksettings' is not initialized in this path, drivers receive an uninitialized number of lanes in 'struct ethtool_link_ksettings::lanes'. When this information is later queried from drivers, it results in the ethtool code making decisions based on uninitialized memory, leading to the following KMSAN splat [1]. In practice, this most likely only happens with the tun driver that simply returns whatever it got in the set operation. As far as I can tell, this uninitialized memory is not leaked to user space thanks to the 'ethtool_ops->cap_link_lanes_supported' check in linkmodes_prepare_data(). Fix by initializing the structure in the IOCTL path. Did not find any more call sites that pass an uninitialized structure when calling 'ethtool_ops::set_link_ksettings()'. 2022-12-28net/ethtool/ioctl: split ethtool_get_phy_stats into multiple helpersDaniil Tatianin
So that it's easier to follow and make sense of the branching and various conditions. Stats retrieval has been split into two separate functions ethtool_get_phy_stats_phydev & ethtool_get_phy_stats_ethtool. The former attempts to retrieve the stats using phydev & phy_ops, while the latter uses ethtool_ops. Actual n_stats validation & array allocation has been moved into a new ethtool_vzalloc_stats_array helper. This also fixes a potential NULL dereference of ops->get_ethtool_phy_stats where it was getting called in an else branch unconditionally without making sure it was actually present. 2022-11-10ethtool: ethtool_get_drvinfo: populate drvinfo fields even if callback exitsVincent Mailhol
If ethtool_ops::get_drvinfo() callback isn't set, ethtool_get_drvinfo() will fill the ethtool_drvinfo::name and ethtool_drvinfo::bus_info fields. However, if the driver provides the callback function, those two fields are not touched. This means that the driver has to fill these itself. Allow the driver to leave those two fields empty and populate them in such case. This way, the driver can rely on the default values for the name and the bus_info. 2022-09-23net: phy: Add support for rate matchingSean Anderson
This adds support for rate matching (also known as rate adaptation) to the phy subsystem. The general idea is that the phy interface runs at one speed, and the MAC throttles the rate at which it sends packets to the link speed. There's a good overview of several techniques for achieving this at [1]. This patch adds support for three: pause-frame based (such as in Aquantia phys), CRS-based (such as in 10PASS-TS and 2BASE-TL), and open-loop-based (such as in 10GBASE-W). This patch makes a few assumptions and a few non assumptions about the types of rate matching available. First, it assumes that different phys may use different forms of rate matching. Second, it assumes that phys can use rate matching for any of their supported link speeds (e.g. if a phy supports 10BASE-T and XGMII, then it can adapt XGMII to 10BASE-T). Third, it does not assume that all interface modes will use the same form of rate matching. Fourth, it does not assume that all phy devices will support rate matching (even if some do). Relaxing or strengthening these (non-)assumptions could result in a different API. For example, if all interface modes were assumed to use the same form of rate matching, then a bitmask of interface modes supportting rate matching would suffice. For some better visibility into the process, the current rate matching mode is exposed as part of the ethtool ksettings. For the moment, only read access is supported. I'm not sure what userspace might want to configure yet (disable it altogether, disable just one mode, specify the mode to use, etc.). For the moment, since only pause-based rate adaptation support is added in the next few commits, rate matching can be disabled altogether by adjusting the advertisement. 802.3 calls this feature "rate adaptation" in clause 49 (10GBASE-R) and "rate matching" in clause 61 (10PASS-TL and 2BASE-TS). Aquantia also calls this feature "rate adaptation". I chose "rate matching" because it is shorter, and because Russell doesn't think "adaptation" is correct in this context. 2022-06-13ethtool: Fix and simplify ethtool_convert_link_mode_to_legacy_u32()Marco Bonelli
Fix the implementation of ethtool_convert_link_mode_to_legacy_u32(), which is supposed to return false if src has bits higher than 31 set. The current implementation uses the complement of bitmap_fill(ext, 32) to test high bits of src, which is wrong as bitmap_fill() fills _with long granularity_, and sizeof(long) can be > 4. No users of this function currently check the return value, so the bug was dormant. Also remove the check for __ETHTOOL_LINK_MODE_MASK_NBITS > 32, as the enum ethtool_link_mode_bit_indices contains far beyond 32 values. Using find_next_bit() to test the src bitmask works regardless of this anyway.
