Kbuild conventionally uses $(obj)/ for generated files, and $(src)/ for
checked-in source files. It is merely a convention without any functional
difference. In fact, $(obj) and $(src) are exactly the same, as defined
in scripts/Makefile.build:
src := $(obj)
When the kernel is built in a separate output directory, $(src) does
not accurately reflect the source directory location. While Kbuild
resolves this discrepancy by specifying VPATH=$(srctree) to search for
source files, it does not cover all cases. For example, when adding a
header search path for local headers, -I$(srctree)/$(src) is typically
passed to the compiler.
This introduces inconsistency between upstream and downstream Makefiles
because $(src) is used instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for the latter.
To address this inconsistency, this commit changes the semantics of
$(src) so that it always points to the directory in the source tree.
Going forward, the variables used in Makefiles will have the following
meanings:
$(obj) - directory in the object tree
$(src) - directory in the source tree (changed by this commit)
$(objtree) - the top of the kernel object tree
$(srctree) - the top of the kernel source tree
Consequently, $(srctree)/$(src) in upstream Makefiles need to be replaced
with $(src).

LLVM moved their issue tracker from their own Bugzilla instance to GitHub
issues. While all of the links are still valid, they may not necessarily
show the most up to date information around the issues, as all updates
will occur on GitHub, not Bugzilla.
Another complication is that the Bugzilla issue number is not always the
same as the GitHub issue number. Thankfully, LLVM maintains this mapping
through two shortlinks:
https://llvm.org/bz<num> -> https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=<num>
https://llvm.org/pr<num> -> https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/<mapped_num>
Switch all "https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=<num>" links to the
"https://llvm.org/pr<num>" shortlink so that the links show the most up to
date information. Each migrated issue links back to the Bugzilla entry,
so there should be no loss of fidelity of information here.

The kernel_fpu structure has a quite large size of 520 bytes. In order to
reduce stack footprint introduce several kernel fpu structures with
different and also smaller sizes. This way every kernel fpu user must use
the correct variant. A compile time check verifies that the correct variant
is used.
There are several users which use only 16 instead of all 32 vector
registers. For those users the new kernel_fpu_16 structure with a size of
only 266 bytes can be used.

Move, rename, and merge the fpu and vx header files. This way fpu header
files have a consistent naming scheme (fpu*.h).
Also get rid of the fpu subdirectory and move header files to asm
directory, so that all fpu and vx header files can be found at the same
location.
Merge internal.h header file into other header files, since the internal
helpers are used at many locations. so those helper functions are really
not internal.

Code sections in s390 specific kernel code which use floating point or
vector registers all come with a 520 byte stack variable to save already in
use registers, if required.
With INIT_STACK_ALL_PATTERN or INIT_STACK_ALL_ZERO enabled this variable
will always be initialized on function entry in addition to saving register
contents, which contradicts the intention (performance improvement) of such
code sections.
Therefore provide a DECLARE_KERNEL_FPU_ONSTACK() macro which provides
struct kernel_fpu variables with an __uninitialized attribute, and convert
all existing code to use this.
This way only this specific type of stack variable will not be initialized,
regardless of config options.

Get rid of MACHINE_HAS_VX and replace it with cpu_has_vx() which is a
short readable wrapper for "test_facility(129)".
Facility bit 129 is set if the vector facility is present. test_facility()
returns also true for all bits which are set in the architecture level set
of the cpu that the kernel is compiled for. This means that
test_facility(129) is a compile time constant which returns true for z13
and later, since the vector facility bit is part of the z13 kernel ALS.
In result the compiled code will have less runtime checks, and less code.

Similar to the syndrome calculation, the recovery algorithms also work
on 64 bytes at a time to align with the L1 cache line size of current
and future LoongArch cores (that we care about). Which means
unrolled-by-4 LSX and unrolled-by-2 LASX code.
The assembly is originally based on the x86 SSSE3/AVX2 ports, but
register allocation has been redone to take advantage of LSX/LASX's 32
vector registers, and instruction sequence has been optimized to suit
(e.g. LoongArch can perform per-byte srl and andi on vectors, but x86
cannot).
Performance numbers measured by instrumenting the raid6test code, on a
3A5000 system clocked at 2.5GHz:
> lasx 2data: 354.987 MiB/s
> lasx datap: 350.430 MiB/s
> lsx 2data: 340.026 MiB/s
> lsx datap: 337.318 MiB/s
> intx1 2data: 164.280 MiB/s
> intx1 datap: 187.966 MiB/s
Because recovery algorithms are chosen solely based on priority and
availability, lasx is marked as priority 2 and lsx priority 1. At least
for the current generation of LoongArch micro-architectures, LASX should
always be faster than LSX whenever supported, and have similar power
consumption characteristics (because the only known LASX-capable uarch,
the LA464, always compute the full 256-bit result for vector ops).

The algorithms work on 64 bytes at a time, which is the L1 cache line
size of all current and future LoongArch cores (that we care about), as
confirmed by Huacai. The code is based on the generic int.uc algorithm,
unrolled 4 times for LSX and 2 times for LASX. Further unrolling does
not meaningfully improve the performance according to experiments.
Performance numbers measured during system boot on a 3A5000 @ 2.5GHz:

spaces for everything else.
Also, the OPTFLAGS declaration actually included the tabs preceding the

The vector instruction macros can also be used in inline assemblies. For
this the magic
asm(".include \"asm/vx-insn.h\"\n");
must be added to C files in order to avoid that the pre-processor
eliminates the __ASSEMBLY__ guarded macros. This however comes with the
problem that changes to asm/vx-insn.h do not cause a recompile of C files
which have only this magic statement instead of a proper include statement.
This can be observed with the arch/s390/kernel/fpu.c file.
In order to fix this problem and also to avoid that the include must
be specified twice, add a wrapper include header file which will do
all necessary steps.
This way only the vx-insn.h header file needs to be included and changes to
the new vx-insn-asm.h header file cause a recompile of all dependent files
like it should.

In commit fe5cbc6e06c7 ("md/raid6 algorithms: delta syndrome functions")
a xor_syndrome() benchmarking was added also to the raid6_choose_gen()
function. However, the results of that benchmarking were intentionally
discarded and did not influence the choice. It picked the
xor_syndrome() variant related to the best performing gen_syndrome().
Reduce runtime of raid6_choose_gen() without modifying its outcome by
only benchmarking the xor_syndrome() of the best gen_syndrome() variant.
For a HZ=250 x86_64 system with avx2 and without avx512 this removes
5 out of 6 xor() benchmarks, saving 340ms of raid6 initialization time.

Older versions of BSD awk are fussy about the order of '-v' and '-f'
flags, and require a space after the flag name. This causes build
failures on platforms with an old awk, such as macOS and NetBSD.
Since GNU awk and modern versions of BSD awk (distributed with
FreeBSD/OpenBSD) are fine with either form, the definition of
'cmd_unroll' can be trivially tweaked to let the lib/raid6 Makefile
work with both old and new awk flag dialects.

CONFIG_AS_SSSE3 was introduced by commit 75aaf4c3e6a4 ("x86/raid6:
correctly check for assembler capabilities").
We raise the minimal supported binutils version from time to time.
The last bump was commit 1fb12b35e5ff ("kbuild: Raise the minimum
required binutils version to 2.21").
I confirmed the code in $(call as-instr,...) can be assembled by the
binutils 2.21 assembler and also by LLVM integrated assembler.
Remove CONFIG_AS_SSSE3, which is always defined.
I added ifdef CONFIG_X86 to lib/raid6/algos.c to avoid link errors
on non-x86 architectures.
lib/raid6/algos.c is built not only for the kernel but also for
testing the library code from userspace. I added -DCONFIG_X86 to
lib/raid6/test/Makefile to cator to this usecase.

You can build a user-space test program for the raid6 library code,
like this:
$ cd lib/raid6/test
$ make
The command in $(shell ...) function is evaluated by /bin/sh by default.
(or, you can specify the shell by passing SHELL=<shell> from command line)
Currently '>&/dev/null' is used to sink both stdout and stderr. Because
this code is bash-ism, it only works when /bin/sh is a symbolic link to
bash (this is the case on RHEL etc.)
This does not work on Ubuntu where /bin/sh is a symbolic link to dash.
I see lots of
/bin/sh: 1: Syntax error: Bad fd number
and
warning "your version of binutils lacks ... support"
Replace it with portable '>/dev/null 2>&1'.

In old days, the "host-progs" syntax was used for specifying host
programs. It was renamed to the current "hostprogs-y" in 2004.
It is typically useful in scripts/Makefile because it allows Kbuild to
selectively compile host programs based on the kernel configuration.
This commit renames like follows:
always -> always-y
hostprogs-y -> hostprogs
So, scripts/Makefile will look like this:
always-$(CONFIG_BUILD_BIN2C) += ...
always-$(CONFIG_KALLSYMS) += ...
...
hostprogs := $(always-y) $(always-m)
I think this makes more sense because a host program is always a host
program, irrespective of the kernel configuration. We want to specify
which ones to compile by CONFIG options, so always-y will be handier.
The "always", "hostprogs-y", "hostprogs-m" will be kept for backward
compatibility for a while.

There are several algorithms available for raid6 to generate xor and syndrome
parity, including basic int1, int2 ... int32 and SIMD optimized implementation
like sse and neon. To test and choose the best algorithms at the initial
stage, we need provide enough disk data to feed the algorithms. However, the
disk number we provided depends on page size and gfmul table, seeing bellow:
const int disks = (65536/PAGE_SIZE) + 2;
So when come to 64K PAGE_SIZE, there is only one data disk plus 2 parity disk,
as a result the chosed algorithm is not reliable. For example, on my arm64
machine with 64K page enabled, it will choose intx32 as the best one, although
the NEON implementation is better.
This patch tries to fix the problem by defining a constant raid6 disk number to
supporting arbitrary page size.

Newer versions of awk spit out these fun warnings:
awk: ../lib/raid6/unroll.awk:16: warning: regexp escape sequence `\#' is not a known regexp operator
As commit 700c1018b86d ("x86/insn: Fix awk regexp warnings") showed, it
turns out that there are a number of awk strings that do not need to be
escaped and newer versions of awk now warn about this.
Fix the string up so that no warning is produced. The exact same kernel
module gets created before and after this patch, showing that it wasn't
needed.

Pull s390 updates from Vasily Gorbik:
- Improve stop_machine wait logic: replace cpu_relax_yield call in
generic stop_machine function with a weak stop_machine_yield
function. This is overridden on s390, which yields the current cpu to
the neighbouring cpu after a couple of retries, instead of blindly
giving up the cpu to the hipervisor. This significantly improves
stop_machine performance on s390 in overcommitted scenarios.
This includes common code changes which have been Acked by Peter
Zijlstra and Thomas Gleixner.
- Improve jump label transformation speed: transform jump labels
without using stop_machine.
- Refactoring of the vfio-ccw cp handling, simplifying the code and
avoiding unneeded allocating/copying.
- Various vfio-ccw fixes (ccw translation, state machine).
- Add support for vfio-ap queue interrupt control in the guest. This
includes s390 kvm changes which have been Acked by Christian
Borntraeger.
- Add protected virtualization support for virtio-ccw.
- Enforce both CONFIG_SMP and CONFIG_HOTPLUG_CPU, which allows to
remove some code which most likely isn't working at all, besides that
s390 didn't even compile for !CONFIG_SMP.
- Support for special flagged EP11 CPRBs for zcrypt.
- Handle PCI devices with no support for new MIO instructions.
- Avoid KASAN false positives in reworked stack unwinder.
- Couple of fixes for the QDIO layer.
- Convert s390 specific documentation to ReST format.
- Let s390 crypto modules return -ENODEV instead of -EOPNOTSUPP if
hardware is missing. This way our modules behave like most other
modules and which is also what systemd's systemd-modules-load.service
expects.
- Replace defconfig with performance_defconfig, so there is one config
file less to maintain.
- Remove the SCLP call home device driver, which was never useful.
- Cleanups all over the place.

Pull ARM updates from Russell King:
- An improvement from Ard Biesheuvel, who noted that the identity map
setup was taking a long time due to flush_cache_louis().
- Update a comment about dma_ops from Wolfram Sang.
- Remove use of "-p" with ld, where this flag has been a no-op since
2004.
- Remove the printing of the virtual memory layout, which is no longer
useful since we hide pointers.
- Correct SCU help text.
- Remove legacy TWD registration method.
- Add pgprot_device() implementation for mapping PCI sysfs resource
files.
- Initialise PFN limits earlier for kmemleak.
- Fix argument count to match macro definition (affects clang builds)
- Use unified assembler language almost everywhere for clang, and other
clang improvements (from Stefan Agner, Nathan Chancellor).
- Support security extension for noMMU and other noMMU cleanups (from
Vladimir Murzin).
- Remove unnecessary SMP bringup code (which was incorrectly copy'n'
pasted from the ARM platform implementations) and remove it from the
arch code to discourge further copys of it appearing.
- Add Cortex A9 erratum preventing kexec working on some SoCs.
- AMBA bus identification updates from Mike Leach.
- More use of raw spinlocks to avoid -RT kernel issues (from Yang Shi
and Sebastian Andrzej Siewior).
- MCPM hyp/svc mode mismatch fixes from Marek Szyprowski.

The NEON recovery code was modeled after the x86 SIMD code, and for
some reason, that code uses a 16 bit wide signed shift and a mask to
perform what amounts to a 8 bit unsigned shift. So fold the ops
together.

Clang warns: vector initializers are not compatible with NEON intrinsics
in big endian mode [-Wnonportable-vector-initialization]
While this is usually the case, it's not an issue for this case since
we're initializing the uint8x16_t (16x uint8_t's) with the same value.
Instead, use vdupq_n_u8 which both compilers lower into a single movi
instruction: https://godbolt.org/z/vBrgzt
This avoids the static storage for a constant value.

While building arm32 allyesconfig, I ran into the following errors:
arch/arm/lib/xor-neon.c:17:2: error: You should compile this file with
'-mfloat-abi=softfp -mfpu=neon'
In file included from lib/raid6/neon1.c:27:
/home/nathan/cbl/prebuilt/lib/clang/8.0.0/include/arm_neon.h:28:2:
error: "NEON support not enabled"
Building V=1 showed NEON_FLAGS getting passed along to Clang but
__ARM_NEON__ was not getting defined. Ultimately, it boils down to Clang
only defining __ARM_NEON__ when targeting armv7, rather than armv6k,
which is the '-march' value for allyesconfig.
>From lib/Basic/Targets/ARM.cpp in the Clang source:
// This only gets set when Neon instructions are actually available, unlike
// the VFP define, hence the soft float and arch check. This is subtly
// different from gcc, we follow the intent which was that it should be set
// when Neon instructions are actually available.
if ((FPU & NeonFPU) && !SoftFloat && ArchVersion >= 7) {
Builder.defineMacro("__ARM_NEON", "1");
Builder.defineMacro("__ARM_NEON__");
// current AArch32 NEON implementations do not support double-precision
// floating-point even when it is present in VFP.
Builder.defineMacro("__ARM_NEON_FP",
"0x" + Twine::utohexstr(HW_FP & ~HW_FP_DP));
}
Ard Biesheuvel recommended explicitly adding '-march=armv7-a' at the
beginning of the NEON_FLAGS definitions so that __ARM_NEON__ always gets
definined by Clang. This doesn't functionally change anything because
that code will only run where NEON is supported, which is implicitly
armv7.
