2024-07-08NFSv4/pNFS: Do layout state recovery upon rebootTrond Myklebust
Some pNFS implementations, such as flexible files, want the client to send the layout stats and layout errors that may have incurred while the metadata server was booting. To do so, the client sends a layoutreturn with an all-zero stateid while the server is in grace during reboot recovery. 2024-05-20NFSv4: Fixup smatch warning for ambiguous returnBenjamin Coddington
Dan Carpenter reports smatch warning for nfs4_try_migration() when a memory allocation failure results in a zero return value. In this case, a transient allocation failure error will likely be retried the next time the server responds with NFS4ERR_MOVED. We can fixup the smatch warning with a small refactor: attempt all three allocations before testing and returning on a failure. 2024-03-09NFSv4: nfs4_do_open() is incorrectly triggering state recoveryTrond Myklebust
We're seeing spurious calls to nfs4_schedule_stateid_recovery() from nfs4_do_open() in situations where there is no trigger coming from the server. In theory the code path being triggered is supposed to notice that state recovery happened while we were processing the open call result from the server, before the open stateid is published. However in the years since that code was added, we've also added the 'session draining' mechanism, which ensures that the state recovery will wait until all the session slots have been returned. In nfs4_do_open() the session slot is only returned on exit of the function, so we don't need the legacy mechanism. Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <trond.myklebust@hammerspace.com>

2022-12-06NFS: avoid spurious warning of lost lock that is being unlocked.NeilBrown
When the NFSv4 state manager recovers state after a server restart, it reports that locks have been lost if it finds any lock state for which recovery hasn't been successful. i.e. any for which NFS_LOCK_INITIALIZED is not set. However it only tries to recover locks that are still linked to inode->i_flctx. So if a lock has been removed from inode->i_flctx, but the state for that lock has not yet been destroyed, then a spurious warning results. nfs4_proc_unlck() calls locks_lock_inode_wait() - which removes the lock from ->i_flctx - before sending the unlock request to the server and before the final nfs4_put_lock_state() is called. This allows a window in which a spurious warning can be produced. So add a new flag NFS_LOCK_UNLOCKING which is set once the decision has been made to unlock the lock. This will prevent it from triggering any warning. Signed-off-by: NeilBrown <neilb@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <trond.myklebust@hammerspace.com>

2022-09-07freezer,sched: Rewrite core freezer logicPeter Zijlstra
Rewrite the core freezer to behave better wrt thawing and be simpler in general. By replacing PF_FROZEN with TASK_FROZEN, a special block state, it is ensured frozen tasks stay frozen until thawed and don't randomly wake up early, as is currently possible. As such, it does away with PF_FROZEN and PF_FREEZER_SKIP, freeing up two PF_flags (yay!). Specifically; the current scheme works a little like: freezer_do_not_count(); schedule(); freezer_count(); And either the task is blocked, or it lands in try_to_freezer() through freezer_count(). Now, when it is blocked, the freezer considers it frozen and continues. However, on thawing, once pm_freezing is cleared, freezer_count() stops working, and any random/spurious wakeup will let a task run before its time. That is, thawing tries to thaw things in explicit order; kernel threads and workqueues before doing bringing SMP back before userspace etc.. However due to the above mentioned races it is entirely possible for userspace tasks to thaw (by accident) before SMP is back. This can be a fatal problem in asymmetric ISA architectures (eg ARMv9) where the userspace task requires a special CPU to run. As said; replace this with a special task state TASK_FROZEN and add the following state transitions: TASK_FREEZABLE -> TASK_FROZEN __TASK_STOPPED -> TASK_FROZEN __TASK_TRACED -> TASK_FROZEN The new TASK_FREEZABLE can be set on any state part of TASK_NORMAL (IOW. TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE and TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE) -- any such state is already required to deal with spurious wakeups and the freezer causes one such when thawing the task (since the original state is lost). The special __TASK_{STOPPED,TRACED} states *can* be restored since their canonical state is in ->jobctl. With this, frozen tasks need an explicit TASK_FROZEN wakeup and are free of undue (early / spurious) wakeups. 2022-06-30NFS: restore module put when manager exits.NeilBrown
Commit f49169c97fce ("NFSD: Remove svc_serv_ops::svo_module") removed calls to module_put_and_kthread_exit() from threads that acted as SUNRPC servers and had a related svc_serv_ops structure. This was correct. It ALSO removed the module_put_and_kthread_exit() call from nfs4_run_state_manager() which is NOT a SUNRPC service. Consequently every time the NFSv4 state manager runs the module count increments and won't be decremented. So the nfsv4 module cannot be unloaded. So restore the module_put_and_kthread_exit() call. 2022-05-17NFS: Improve warning message when locks are lost.NeilBrown
NFSv4 can lose locks if, for example there is a network partition for longer than the lease period. When this happens a warning message NFS: __nfs4_reclaim_open_state: Lock reclaim failed! is generated, possibly once for each lock (though rate limited). This is potentially misleading as is can be read as suggesting that lock reclaim was attempted. However the default behaviour is to not attempt to recover locks (except due to server report). This patch changes the reporting to produce at most one message for each attempt to recover all state from a given server. The message reports the server name and the number of locks lost if that number is non-zero. It reports that locks were lost and give no suggestion as to whether there was an attempt or not. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. There are several loosely related changes included because I am cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost. Update module_put_and_exit to call kthread_exit instead of do_exit. Change the name to reflect this change in functionality. All of the users of module_put_and_exit are causing the current kthread to exit so this change makes it clear what is happening. There is no functional change. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. 2021-05-07treewide: remove editor modelines and cruftMasahiro Yamada
The section "19) Editor modelines and other cruft" in Documentation/process/coding-style.rst clearly says, "Do not include any of these in source files." I recently receive a patch to explicitly add a new one. Let's do treewide cleanups, otherwise some people follow the existing code and attempt to upstream their favoriate editor setups. It is even nicer if scripts/checkpatch.pl can check it. If we like to impose coding style in an editor-independent manner, I think editorconfig (patch [1]) is a saner solution. 2020-07-29NFSv4: Use sequence counter with associated spinlockAhmed S. Darwish
A sequence counter write side critical section must be protected by some form of locking to serialize writers. A plain seqcount_t does not contain the information of which lock must be held when entering a write side critical section. Use the new seqcount_spinlock_t data type, which allows to associate a spinlock with the sequence counter. This enables lockdep to verify that the spinlock used for writer serialization is held when the write side critical section is entered. If lockdep is disabled this lock association is compiled out and has neither storage size nor runtime overhead. Signed-off-by: Ahmed S. 2020-05-11nfs: fix NULL deference in nfs4_get_valid_delegationJ. Bruce Fields
We add the new state to the nfsi->open_states list, making it potentially visible to other threads, before we've finished initializing it. That wasn't a problem when all the readers were also taking the i_lock (as we do here), but since we switched to RCU, there's now a possibility that a reader could see the partially initialized state. Symptoms observed were a crash when another thread called nfs4_get_valid_delegation() on a NULL inode, resulting in an oops like: BUG: unable to handle page fault for address: ffffffffffffffb0 ... 2020-02-04NFSv4.0: nfs4_do_fsinfo() should not do implicit lease renewalsRobert Milkowski
Currently, each time nfs4_do_fsinfo() is called it will do an implicit NFS4 lease renewal, which is not compliant with the NFS4 specification. This can result in a lease being expired by an NFS server. Commit 83ca7f5ab31f ("NFS: Avoid PUTROOTFH when managing leases") introduced implicit client lease renewal in nfs4_do_fsinfo(), which can result in the NFSv4.0 lease to expire on a server side, and servers returning NFS4ERR_EXPIRED or NFS4ERR_STALE_CLIENTID. This can easily be reproduced by frequently unmounting a sub-mount, then stat'ing it to get it mounted again, which will delay or even completely prevent client from sending RENEW operations if no other NFS operations are issued. Eventually nfs server will expire client's lease and return an error on file access or next RENEW. This can also happen when a sub-mount is automatically unmounted due to inactivity (after nfs_mountpoint_expiry_timeout), then it is mounted again via stat(). This can result in a short window during which client's lease will expire on a server but not on a client. This specific case was observed on production systems. This patch removes the implicit lease renewal from nfs4_do_fsinfo().
