2023-07-01mm: Update do_vmi_align_munmap() return semanticsLiam R. Howlett
Since do_vmi_align_munmap() will always honor the downgrade request on the success, the callers no longer have to deal with confusing return codes. Since all callers that request downgrade actually want the lock to be dropped, change the downgrade to an unlock request. Note that the lock still needs to be held in read mode during the page table clean up to avoid races with a map request. Update do_vmi_align_munmap() to return 0 for success. Clean up the callers and comments to always expect the unlock to be honored on the success path. The error path will always leave the lock untouched. As part of the cleanup, the wrapper function do_vmi_munmap() and callers to the wrapper are also updated. 2023-06-19mm: ptep_get() conversionRyan Roberts
Convert all instances of direct pte_t* dereferencing to instead use ptep_get() helper. This means that by default, the accesses change from a C dereference to a READ_ONCE(). This is technically the correct thing to do since where pgtables are modified by HW (for access/dirty) they are volatile and therefore we should always ensure READ_ONCE() semantics. But more importantly, by always using the helper, it can be overridden by the architecture to fully encapsulate the contents of the pte. Arch code is deliberately not converted, as the arch code knows best. It is intended that arch code (arm64) will override the default with its own implementation that can (e.g.) hide certain bits from the core code, or determine young/dirty status by mixing in state from another source. Conversion was done using Coccinelle: ---- // $ make coccicheck \ // COCCI=ptepget.cocci \ // SPFLAGS="--include-headers" \ // MODE=patch virtual patch @ depends on patch @ pte_t *v; @@ - *v + ptep_get(v) ---- Then reviewed and hand-edited to avoid multiple unnecessary calls to ptep_get(), instead opting to store the result of a single call in a variable, where it is correct to do so. This aims to negate any cost of READ_ONCE() and will benefit arch-overrides that may be more complex. Included is a fix for an issue in an earlier version of this patch that was pointed out by kernel test robot. The issue arose because config MMU=n elides definition of the ptep helper functions, including ptep_get(). HUGETLB_PAGE=n configs still define a simple huge_ptep_clear_flush() for linking purposes, which dereferences the ptep. So when both configs are disabled, this caused a build error because ptep_get() is not defined. Fix by continuing to do a direct dereference when MMU=n. This is safe because for this config the arch code cannot be trying to virtualize the ptes because none of the ptep helpers are defined. 2023-06-19mm/mremap: retry if either pte_offset_map_*lock() failsHugh Dickins
move_ptes() return -EAGAIN if pte_offset_map_lock() of old fails, or if pte_offset_map_nolock() of new fails: move_page_tables() retry if so. But that does need a pmd_none() check inside, to stop endless loop when huge shmem is truncated (thank you to syzbot); and move_huge_pmd() must tolerate that a page table might have been allocated there just before (of course it would be more satisfying to remove the empty page table, but this is not a path worth optimizing). 2023-06-09mm/mlock: rename mlock_future_check() to mlock_future_ok()Andrew Morton

2023-06-09mm/mmap: refactor mlock_future_check()Lorenzo Stoakes
In all but one instance, mlock_future_check() is treated as a boolean function despite returning an error code. In one instance, this error code is ignored and replaced with -ENOMEM. This is confusing, and the inversion of true -> failure, false -> success is not warranted. Convert the function to a bool, lightly refactor and return true if the check passes, false if not. 2023-03-28x86/mm/pat: clear VM_PAT if copy_p4d_range failedMa Wupeng
Syzbot reports a warning in untrack_pfn(). Digging into the root we found that this is due to memory allocation failure in pmd_alloc_one. And this failure is produced due to failslab. In copy_page_range(), memory alloaction for pmd failed. During the error handling process in copy_page_range(), mmput() is called to remove all vmas. While untrack_pfn this empty pfn, warning happens. Here's a simplified flow: dup_mm dup_mmap copy_page_range copy_p4d_range copy_pud_range copy_pmd_range pmd_alloc __pmd_alloc pmd_alloc_one page = alloc_pages(gfp, 0); if (!page) return NULL; mmput exit_mmap unmap_vmas unmap_single_vma untrack_pfn follow_phys WARN_ON_ONCE(1); Since this vma is not generate successfully, we can clear flag VM_PAT. In this case, untrack_pfn() will not be called while cleaning this vma. Function untrack_pfn_moved() has also been renamed to fit the new logic. 2023-01-31mm, mremap: fix mremap() expanding for vma's with vm_ops->close()Vlastimil Babka
Fabian has reported another regression in 6.1 due to ca3d76b0aa80 ("mm: add merging after mremap resize"). The problem is that vma_merge() can fail when vma has a vm_ops->close() method, causing is_mergeable_vma() test to be negative. This was happening for vma mapping a file from fuse-overlayfs, which does have the method. But when we are simply expanding the vma, we never remove it due to the "merge" with the added area, so the test should not prevent the expansion. As a quick fix, check for such vmas and expand them using vma_adjust() directly as was done before commit ca3d76b0aa80. For a more robust long term solution we should try to limit the check for vma_ops->close only to cases that actually result in vma removal, so that no merge would be prevented unnecessarily. 2022-12-21mm, mremap: fix mremap() expanding vma with addr inside vmaVlastimil Babka
Since 6.1 we have noticed random rpm install failures that were tracked to mremap() returning -ENOMEM and to commit ca3d76b0aa80 ("mm: add merging after mremap resize"). The problem occurs when mremap() expands a VMA in place, but using an starting address that's not vma->vm_start, but somewhere in the middle. The extension_pgoff calculation introduced by the commit is wrong in that case, so vma_merge() fails due to pgoffs not being compatible. Fix the calculation. By the way it seems that the situations, where rpm now expands a vma from the middle, were made possible also due to that commit, thanks to the improved vma merging. Yet it should work just fine, except for the buggy calculation. 2022-09-26mm/mmap: reorganize munmap to use maple statesLiam R. Howlett
Remove __do_munmap() in favour of do_munmap(), do_mas_munmap(), and do_mas_align_munmap(). do_munmap() is a wrapper to create a maple state for any callers that have not been converted to the maple tree. do_mas_munmap() takes a maple state to mumap a range. This is just a small function which checks for error conditions and aligns the end of the range. do_mas_align_munmap() uses the aligned range to mumap a range. do_mas_align_munmap() starts with the first VMA in the range, then finds the last VMA in the range. Both start and end are split if necessary. Then the VMAs are removed from the linked list and the mm mlock count is updated at the same time. Followed by a single tree operation of overwriting the area in with a NULL. Finally, the detached list is unmapped and freed. By reorganizing the munmap calls as outlined, it is now possible to avoid extra work of aligning pre-aligned callers which are known to be safe, avoid extra VMA lookups or tree walks for modifications. detach_vmas_to_be_unmapped() is no longer used, so drop this code. vm_brk_flags() can just call the do_mas_munmap() as it checks for intersecting VMAs directly. 2022-05-13mm: hugetlb: considering PMD sharing when flushing cache/TLBsBaolin Wang
This patchset fixes some cache flushing issues if PMD sharing is possible for hugetlb pages, which were found by code inspection. Meanwhile Mike found the flush_cache_page() can not cover the whole size of a hugetlb page on some architectures [1], so I added a new patch 3 to fix this issue, since I found only try_to_unmap_one() and try_to_migrate_one() need to fix after some investigation. [1] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/064da3bb-5b4b-7332-a722-c5a541128705@oracle.com/ This patch (of 3): When moving hugetlb page tables, the cache flushing is called in move_page_tables() without considering the shared PMDs, which may be cause cache issues on some architectures. Thus we should move the hugetlb cache flushing into move_hugetlb_page_tables() with considering the shared PMDs ranges, calculated by adjust_range_if_pmd_sharing_possible(). Meanwhile also expanding the TLBs flushing range in case of shared PMDs. Note this is discovered via code inspection, and did not meet a real problem in practice so far. If an mremap() syscall with old_size=0 ends up in move_page_tables(), it will call invalidate_range_start()/invalidate_range_end() unnecessarily, i.e. with an empty range. This causes a WARN in KVM's mmu_notifier. In the past, empty ranges have been diagnosed to be off-by-one bugs, hence the WARNing. Given the low (so far) number of unique reports, the benefits of detecting more buggy callers seem to outweigh the cost of having to fix cases such as this one, where userspace is doing something silly. In this particular case, an early return from move_page_tables() is enough to fix the issue. 2021-11-06mm, hugepages: add mremap() support for hugepage backed vmaMina Almasry
Support mremap() for hugepage backed vma segment by simply repositioning page table entries. The page table entries are repositioned to the new virtual address on mremap(). Hugetlb mremap() support is of course generic; my motivating use case is a library (hugepage_text), which reloads the ELF text of executables in hugepages. This significantly increases the execution performance of said executables. Restrict the mremap operation on hugepages to up to the size of the original mapping as the underlying hugetlb reservation is not yet capable of handling remapping to a larger size. During the mremap() operation we detect pmd_share'd mappings and we unshare those during the mremap(). On access and fault the sharing is established again. All this vm_unacct_memory(charged) dance seems to complicate the life without a good reason. Furthermore, it seems not always done right on error-pathes in mremap_to(). And worse than that: this `charged' difference is sometimes double-accounted for growing MREMAP_DONTUNMAP mremap()s in move_vma(): if (security_vm_enough_memory_mm(mm, new_len >> PAGE_SHIFT)) Let's not do this. Account memory in mremap() fast-path for growing VMAs or in move_vma() for actually moving things. The same simpler way as it's done by vm_stat_account(), but with a difference to call security_vm_enough_memory_mm() before copying/adjusting VMA. 2021-09-03mm/mremap: fix memory account on do_munmap() failureChen Wandun
mremap will account the delta between new_len and old_len in vma_to_resize, and then call move_vma when expanding an existing memory mapping. In function move_vma, there are two scenarios when calling do_munmap: 1. move_page_tables from old_addr to new_addr success 2. move_page_tables from old_addr to new_addr fail In first scenario, it should account old_len if do_munmap fail, because the delta has already been accounted. In second scenario, new_addr/new_len will assign to old_addr/old_len if move_page_table fail, so do_munmap is try to unmap new_addr actually, if do_munmap fail, it should account the new_len, because error code will be return from move_vma, and delta will be unaccounted. What'more, because of new_len == old_len, so account old_len also is OK. In summary, account old_len will be correct if do_munmap fail. 2021-07-08mm/mremap: hold the rmap lock in write mode when moving page table entries.Aneesh Kumar K.V
To avoid a race between rmap walk and mremap, mremap does take_rmap_locks(). The lock was taken to ensure that rmap walk don't miss a page table entry due to PTE moves via move_pagetables(). The kernel does further optimization of this lock such that if we are going to find the newly added vma after the old vma, the rmap lock is not taken. This is because rmap walk would find the vmas in the same order and if we don't find the page table attached to older vma we would find it with the new vma which we would iterate later. As explained in commit eb66ae030829 ("mremap: properly flush TLB before releasing the page") mremap is special in that it doesn't take ownership of the page. The optimized version for PUD/PMD aligned mremap also doesn't hold the ptl lock. This can result in stale TLB entries as show below. This patch updates the rmap locking requirement in mremap to handle the race condition explained below with optimized mremap:: Optmized PMD move CPU 1 CPU 2 CPU 3 mremap(old_addr, new_addr) page_shrinker/try_to_unmap_one mmap_write_lock_killable() addr = old_addr lock(pte_ptl) lock(pmd_ptl) pmd = *old_pmd pmd_clear(old_pmd) flush_tlb_range(old_addr) *new_pmd = pmd *new_addr = 10; and fills TLB with new addr and old pfn unlock(pmd_ptl) ptep_clear_flush() old pfn is free. Stale TLB entry Optimized PUD move also suffers from a similar race. Both the above race condition can be fixed if we force mremap path to take rmap lock. 2021-07-08mm/mremap: convert huge PUD move to separate helperAneesh Kumar K.V
With TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE_PUD enabled the kernel can find huge PUD entries. Add a helper to move huge PUD entries on mremap(). This will be used by a later patch to optimize mremap of PUD_SIZE aligned level 4 PTE mapped address This also make sure we support mremap on huge PUD entries even with CONFIG_HAVE_MOVE_PUD disabled. 2021-04-30Revert "mremap: don't allow MREMAP_DONTUNMAP on special_mappings and aio"Brian Geffon
This reverts commit cd544fd1dc9293c6702fab6effa63dac1cc67e99. As discussed in [1] this commit was a no-op because the mapping type was checked in vma_to_resize before move_vma is ever called. This meant that vm_ops->mremap() would never be called on such mappings. Furthermore, we've since expanded support of MREMAP_DONTUNMAP to non-anonymous mappings, and these special mappings are still protected by the existing check of !VM_DONTEXPAND and !VM_PFNMAP which will result in a -EINVAL. 1. https://lkml.org/lkml/2020/12/28/2340 Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20210323182520.2712101-2-bgeffon@google.com Signed-off-by: Brian Geffon <bgeffon@google.com> Acked-by: Hugh Dickins <hughd@google.com> Reviewed-by: Dmitry Safonov <0x7f454c46@gmail.com> Cc: Alejandro Colomar <alx.manpages@gmail.com> Cc: Andrea Arcangeli <aarcange@redhat.com> Cc: Andy Lutomirski <luto@amacapital.net> Cc: Axel Rasmussen <axelrasmussen@google.com> Cc: "Kirill A . 2021-04-30mm: extend MREMAP_DONTUNMAP to non-anonymous mappingsBrian Geffon
Patch series "mm: Extend MREMAP_DONTUNMAP to non-anonymous mappings", v5. This patch (of 3): Currently MREMAP_DONTUNMAP only accepts private anonymous mappings. This restriction was placed initially for simplicity and not because there exists a technical reason to do so. This change will widen the support to include any mappings which are not VM_DONTEXPAND or VM_PFNMAP. The primary use case is to support MREMAP_DONTUNMAP on mappings which may have been created from a memfd. This change will result in mremap(MREMAP_DONTUNMAP) returning -EINVAL if VM_DONTEXPAND or VM_PFNMAP mappings are specified. Lokesh Gidra who works on the Android JVM, provided an explanation of how such a feature will improve Android JVM garbage collection: "Android is developing a new garbage collector (GC), based on userfaultfd. The garbage collector will use userfaultfd (uffd) on the java heap during compaction. On accessing any uncompacted page, the application threads will find it missing, at which point the thread will create the compacted page and then use UFFDIO_COPY ioctl to get it mapped and then resume execution. Before starting this compaction, in a stop-the-world pause the heap will be mremap(MREMAP_DONTUNMAP) so that the java heap is ready to receive UFFD_EVENT_PAGEFAULT events after resuming execution. To speedup mremap operations, pagetable movement was optimized by moving PUD entries instead of PTE entries [1]. It was necessary as mremap of even modest sized memory ranges also took several milliseconds, and stopping the application for that long isn't acceptable in response-time sensitive cases. With UFFDIO_CONTINUE feature [2], it will be even more efficient to implement this GC, particularly the 'non-moveable' portions of the heap. It will also help in reducing the need to copy (UFFDIO_COPY) the pages. However, for this to work, the java heap has to be on a 'shared' vma. Currently MREMAP_DONTUNMAP only supports private anonymous mappings, this patch will enable using UFFDIO_CONTINUE for the new userfaultfd-based heap compaction." 2021-02-24mm: mremap: unlink anon_vmas when mremap with MREMAP_DONTUNMAP successLi Xinhai
mremap with MREMAP_DONTUNMAP can move all page table entries to new vma, which means all pages allocated for the old vma are not relevant to it anymore, and the relevant anon_vma links needs to be unlinked, in nature the old vma is much like been freshly created and have no pages been fault in. But we should not do unlink, if the new vma has effectively merged with the old one. 2020-12-15mremap: check if it's possible to split original vmaDmitry Safonov
If original VMA can't be split at the desired address, do_munmap() will fail and leave both new-copied VMA and old VMA. De-facto it's MREMAP_DONTUNMAP behaviour, which is unexpected. Currently, it may fail such way for hugetlbfs and dax device mappings. Minimize such unpleasant situations to OOM by checking .may_split() before attempting to create a VMA copy.
