2024-05-03arch: Rename fbdev header and source filesThomas Zimmermann
The per-architecture fbdev code has no dependencies on fbdev and can be used for any video-related subsystem. Rename the files to 'video'. Use video-sti.c on parisc as the source file depends on CONFIG_STI_CORE. On arc, arm, arm64, sh, and um the asm header file is an empty wrapper around the file in asm-generic. Let Kbuild generate the file. The build system does this automatically. Only um needs to generate video.h explicitly, so that it overrides the host architecture's header. The latter would otherwise interfere with the build. Further update all includes statements, include guards, and Makefiles. 2024-03-28backlight: Match backlight device against struct fb_info.bl_devThomas Zimmermann
Framebuffer drivers for devices with dedicated backlight are supposed to set struct fb_info.bl_dev to the backlight's respective device. Use the value to match backlight and framebuffer in the backlight core code. The code first tests against struct backlight_ops.check_ops. If this test succeeds, it performs the test against fbdev. So backlight drivers can override the later test as before. Fbdev's backlight support depends on CONFIG_FB_BACKLIGHT. To avoid ifdef in the code, the new helper fb_bl_device() returns the backlight device, or NULL if the config option has been disabled. 2024-03-18drm/omapdrm: Fix console with deferred opsTony Lindgren
Commit 95da53d63dcf ("drm/omapdrm: Use regular fbdev I/O helpers") stopped console from updating for command mode displays because there is no damage handling in fb_sys_write() unlike we had earlier in drm_fb_helper_sys_write(). Let's fix the issue by adding FB_GEN_DEFAULT_DEFERRED_DMAMEM_OPS and FB_DMAMEM_HELPERS_DEFERRED as suggested by Thomas. We cannot use the FB_DEFAULT_DEFERRED_OPS as fb_deferred_io_mmap() won't work properly for write-combine. 2024-03-16fbcon: Increase maximum font width x height to 64 x 128Samuel Thibault
By using bitmaps we actually support whatever size we would want, but the console currently limits fonts to 64x128 (which gives 60x16 text on 4k screens), so we don't need more for now, and we can easily increase later. Drop the default implementations for file read, write and mmap operations. Each fbdev driver must now provide an implementation and select any necessary helpers. If no implementation has been set, fbdev returns an errno code to user space. The code is the same as if the operation had not been set in the file_operations struct. This change makes the fbdev helpers for I/O memory optional. Framebuffers in system memory should be accessed with the regular load and store operations. Presumably not all drivers get this right, so we now warn about it. 2023-11-29fbdev: Move default fb_mmap code into helper functionThomas Zimmermann
Move the default fb_mmap code for I/O address spaces into the helper function fb_io_mmap(). The helper can either be called via struct fb_ops.fb_mmap or as the default if no fb_mmap has been set. Also set the new helper in __FB_DEFAULT_IOMEM_OPS_MMAP. In the mid-term, fb_io_mmap() is supposed to become optional. Fbdev drivers will initialize their struct fb_ops.fb_mmap to the helper and select a corresponding Kconfig token. The helper can then be made optional at compile time. Add initializer macros for struct fb_ops for framebuffers in DMA-able memory areas. Also add a corresponding Kconfig token. As of now, this is equivalent to system framebuffers and mostly useful for labeling drivers correctly. A later patch may add a generic DMA-specific mmap operation. Linux offers a number of dma_mmap_*() helpers for different use cases. 2023-06-27fbdev: Make support for userspace interfaces configurableThomas Zimmermann
Add Kconfig option CONFIG_FB_DEVICE and make the virtual fbdev device optional. If the new option has not been selected, fbdev does not create files in devfs, sysfs or procfs. Most modern Linux systems run a DRM-based graphics stack that uses the kernel's framebuffer console, but has otherwise deprecated fbdev support. Yet fbdev userspace interfaces are still present. The option makes it possible to use the fbdev subsystem as console implementation without support for userspace. This closes potential entry points to manipulate kernel or I/O memory via framebuffers. It also prevents the execution of driver code via ioctl or sysfs, both of which might allow malicious software to exploit bugs in the fbdev code. A small number of fbdev drivers require struct fbinfo.dev to be initialized, usually for the support of sysfs interface. Make these drivers depend on FB_DEVICE. Move the logic to create and destroy fbdev devices into the new helpers fb_device_create() and fb_device_destroy(). There was a call to fb_cleanup_device() in do_unregister_framebuffer() that was too late. The device had already been removed at this point. Move the call into fb_device_destroy(). Declare the helpers in the new internal header file fb_internal.h, as they are only used within the fbdev core module. For framebuffers in I/O and system memory, add macros that set struct fb_ops to the respective callback functions. For deferred I/O, add macros that generate callback functions with damage handling. Add initializer macros that set struct fb_ops to the generated callbacks. These macros can remove a lot boilerplate code from fbdev drivers. The drivers are supposed to use the macro that is required for its framebuffer. Each macro is split into smaller helpers, so that drivers with non-standard callbacks can pick and customize callbacks as needed. Implement framebuffer I/O helpers, such as fb_read*() and fb_write*(), in the architecture's <asm/fb.h> header file or the generic one. The common case has been the use of regular I/O functions, such as __raw_readb() or memset_io(). A few architectures used plain system- memory reads and writes. Sparc used helpers for its SBus. The architectures that used special cases provide the same code in their __raw_*() I/O helpers. Move the existing I/O read and write code for I/O memory into the new helpers fb_cfb_read() and fb_cfb_write(). Make them the default fp_ops. No functional changes. In the near term, the new functions will be useful to the DRM subsystem, which currently provides it's own implementation. It can then use the shared code. In the longer term, it might make sense to revise the I/O helper's default status and make them opt-in by the driver. 2023-03-10fbdev: Fix incorrect page mapping clearance at fb_deferred_io_release()Takashi Iwai
The recent fix for the deferred I/O by the commit 3efc61d95259 ("fbdev: Fix invalid page access after closing deferred I/O devices") caused a regression when the same fb device is opened/closed while it's being used. It resulted in a frozen screen even if something is redrawn there after the close. The breakage is because the patch was made under a wrong assumption of a single open; in the current code, fb_deferred_io_release() cleans up the page mapping of the pageref list and it calls cancel_delayed_work_sync() unconditionally, where both are no correct behavior for multiple opens. This patch adds a refcount for the opens of the device, and applies the cleanup only when all files get closed. As both fb_deferred_io_open() and _close() are called always in the fb_info lock (mutex), it's safe to use the normal int for the refcounting. Also, a useless BUG_ON() is dropped. When a fbdev with deferred I/O is once opened and closed, the dirty pages still remain queued in the pageref list, and eventually later those may be processed in the delayed work. This may lead to a corruption of pages, hitting an Oops. This patch makes sure to cancel the delayed work and clean up the pageref list at closing the device for addressing the bug. A part of the cleanup code is factored out as a new helper function that is called from the common fb_release().
