ATH10K_SCAN_STARTING state
Scan failure can not be recovered from when running a loop of the
following steps:
1. run scan: "iw wlan scan".
2. run command: echo soft > /sys/kernel/debug/ieee80211/phy0/ath10k/simulate_fw_crash
immediately after step 1.
result:
scan failed and can not recover even when wlan recovery succeeds:
command failed: Device or resource busy (-16)
reason:
When scan arrives, WMI_START_SCAN_CMDID is sent to the firmware and
function ath10k_hw_scan() returns, then simulate_fw_crash arrives
and the scan started event does not arrive, and then it starts to do
recovery of wlan. __ath10k_scan_finish() which is called from
ath10k_halt() is one step of recovery, it will not call
ieee80211_scan_completed() by logic currently because the scan state is
ATH10K_SCAN_STARTING. Thus it leads the scan not being completed in
mac80211, and leads all consecutive scans failing with -EBUSY in
nl80211_trigger_scan even after wlan recovery success.
Indicate scan complete with aborted flag to mac80211 for
ATH10K_SCAN_STARTING to allow recovery from scan failed with "Device or
resource busy (-16)" after wlan recovery.

As talked about in commit d66d24ac300c ("ath10k: Keep track of which
interrupts fired, don't poll them"), if we access the copy engine
register at a bad time then ath10k can go boom. However, it's not
necessarily easy to know when it's safe to access them.
The ChromeOS test labs saw a crash that looked like this at
shutdown/reboot time (on a chromeos-5.15 kernel, but likely the
problem could also reproduce upstream):
Internal error: synchronous external abort: 96000010 [#1] PREEMPT SMP

Though there's no known way to reproduce the problem, it makes sense
that it would be the same issue where we're trying to access copy
engine registers when it's not allowed.
Let's fix this by changing how we "disable" the interrupts. Instead of
tweaking the copy engine registers we'll just use disable_irq() and
enable_irq(). Then we'll configure the interrupts once at power up
time.

Prepare for the coming implementation by GCC and Clang of the __counted_by
attribute. Flexible array members annotated with __counted_by can have
their accesses bounds-checked at run-time checking via CONFIG_UBSAN_BOUNDS
(for array indexing) and CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE (for strcpy/memcpy-family
functions).
As found with Coccinelle[1], add __counted_by for struct ath10k_ce_ring.

Pull PCI updates from Bjorn Helgaas:
"Enumeration:
- Add locking to read/modify/write PCIe Capability Register accessors
for Link Control and Root Control
- Use pci_dev_id() when possible instead of manually composing ID
from dev->bus->number and dev->devfn
Resource management:
- Move prototypes for __weak sysfs resource files to linux/pci.h to
fix 'no previous prototype' warnings
- Make more I/O port accesses depend on HAS_IOPORT
- Use devm_platform_get_and_ioremap_resource() instead of open-coding
platform_get_resource() followed by devm_ioremap_resource()
Power management:
- Ensure devices are powered up while accessing VPD
- If device is powered-up, keep it that way while polling for PME
- Only read PCI_PM_CTRL register when available, to avoid reading the
wrong register and corrupting dev->current_state

- To avoid a NULL pointer dereference, skip MSI restore after
hibernate if MSI/MSI-X hasn't been enabled
NVIDIA Tegra194 PCIe controller driver:
- Revert 'PCI: tegra194: Enable support for 256 Byte payload' because
Linux doesn't know how to reduce MPS from to 256 to 128 bytes for
endpoints below a switch (because other devices below the switch
might already be operating), which leads to 'Malformed TLP' errors
Qualcomm PCIe controller driver:
- Add DT and driver support for interconnect bandwidth voting for

A mouse that uses a USB connection is called a "USB mouse" device (or
"USB mouse" for short), not a "mouse USB" device. By analogy, a WiFi
adapter that connects to the host computer via USB is a "USB wireless"
device, not a "wireless USB" device. (The latter term more properly
refers to a defunct Wireless USB specification, which described a
technology for sending USB protocol messages over an ultra wideband
radio link.)
Similarly for a WiFi adapter card that plugs into a PCIe slot: It is a
"PCIe wireless" device, not a "wireless PCIe" device.

Don't assume that only the driver would be accessing LNKCTL. ASPM policy
changes can trigger write to LNKCTL outside of driver's control.
Use RMW capability accessors which does proper locking to avoid losing
concurrent updates to the register value. On restore, clear the ASPMC field
properly.

The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate
of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus.
As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they
"temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h
and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include
files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and
replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to
explicitly include the correct includes.

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next
Pull networking changes from Jakub Kicinski:
"WiFi 7 and sendpage changes are the biggest pieces of work for this
release. The latter will definitely require fixes but I think that we
got it to a reasonable point.
Core:
- Rework the sendpage & splice implementations
Instead of feeding data into sockets page by page extend sendmsg
handlers to support taking a reference on the data, controlled by a
new flag called MSG_SPLICE_PAGES
Rework the handling of unexpected-end-of-file to invoke an
additional callback instead of trying to predict what the right
combination of MORE/NOTLAST flags is
Remove the MSG_SENDPAGE_NOTLAST flag completely
- Implement SCM_PIDFD, a new type of CMSG type analogous to
SCM_CREDENTIALS, but it contains pidfd instead of plain pid
- Enable socket busy polling with CONFIG_RT
- Improve reliability and efficiency of reporting for ref_tracker
- Auto-generate a user space C library for various Netlink families
Protocols:
- Allow TCP to shrink the advertised window when necessary, prevent
sk_rcvbuf auto-tuning from growing the window all the way up to
tcp_rmem[2]
- Use per-VMA locking for "page-flipping" TCP receive zerocopy
- Prepare TCP for device-to-device data transfers, by making sure
that payloads are always attached to skbs as page frags
- Make the backoff time for the first N TCP SYN retransmissions
linear. Exponential backoff is unnecessarily conservative
- Create a new MPTCP getsockopt to retrieve all info
(MPTCP_FULL_INFO)
- Avoid waking up applications using TLS sockets until we have a full
record
- Allow using kernel memory for protocol ioctl callbacks, paving the
way to issuing ioctls over io_uring
- Add nolocalbypass option to VxLAN, forcing packets to be fully
encapsulated even if they are destined for a local IP address
- Make TCPv4 use consistent hash in TIME_WAIT and SYN_RECV. Ensure
in-kernel ECMP implementation (e.g. Open vSwitch) select the same
link for all packets. Support L4 symmetric hashing in Open vSwitch
- PPPoE: make number of hash bits configurable
- Allow DNS to be overwritten by DHCPACK in the in-kernel DHCP client
(ipconfig)
- Add layer 2 miss indication and filtering, allowing higher layers
(e.g. ACL filters) to make forwarding decisions based on whether
packet matched forwarding state in lower devices (bridge)
- Support matching on Connectivity Fault Management (CFM) packets
- Hide the "link becomes ready" IPv6 messages by demoting their
printk level to debug
- HSR: don't enable promiscuous mode if device offloads the proto
- Support active scanning in IEEE 802.15.4
- Continue work on Multi-Link Operation for WiFi 7
BPF:
- Add precision propagation for subprogs and callbacks. This allows
maintaining verification efficiency when subprograms are used, or
in fact passing the verifier at all for complex programs,
especially those using open-coded iterators
- Improve BPF's {g,s}setsockopt() length handling. Previously BPF
assumed the length is always equal to the amount of written data.
But some protos allow passing a NULL buffer to discover what the
output buffer *should* be, without writing anything
- Accept dynptr memory as memory arguments passed to helpers
- Add routing table ID to bpf_fib_lookup BPF helper
- Support O_PATH FDs in BPF_OBJ_PIN and BPF_OBJ_GET commands
- Drop bpf_capable() check in BPF_MAP_FREEZE command (used to mark
maps as read-only)
- Show target_{obj,btf}_id in tracing link fdinfo
- Addition of several new kfuncs (most of the names are
self-explanatory):
- Add a set of new dynptr kfuncs: bpf_dynptr_adjust(),
bpf_dynptr_is_null(), bpf_dynptr_is_rdonly(), bpf_dynptr_size()
and bpf_dynptr_clone().
- bpf_task_under_cgroup()
- bpf_sock_destroy() - force closing sockets
- bpf_cpumask_first_and(), rework bpf_cpumask_any*() kfuncs
Netfilter:
- Relax set/map validation checks in nf_tables. Allow checking
presence of an entry in a map without using the value
- Increase ip_vs_conn_tab_bits range for 64BIT builds
- Allow updating size of a set
- Improve NAT tuple selection when connection is closing
Driver API:
- Integrate netdev with LED subsystem, to allow configuring HW
"offloaded" blinking of LEDs based on link state and activity
(i.e. packets coming in and out)
- Support configuring rate selection pins of SFP modules
- Factor Clause 73 auto-negotiation code out of the drivers, provide
common helper routines
- Add more fool-proof helpers for managing lifetime of MDIO devices
associated with the PCS layer
- Allow drivers to report advanced statistics related to Time Aware
scheduler offload (taprio)
- Allow opting out of VF statistics in link dump, to allow more VFs
to fit into the message
- Split devlink instance and devlink port operations
New hardware / drivers:
- Ethernet:

- Marvell 88E6361 8 port (5x1GE + 3x2.5GE) switches
- Marvell 88E6250 7 port switches
- Microchip LAN8650/1 Rev.B0 PHYs

- extend link aggregation to handle 4, rather than just 2 ports
- spawn sub-functions without any features by default
- OcteonTX2:
- support HTB (Tx scheduling/QoS) offload
- make RSS hash generation configurable
- support selecting Rx queue using TC filters
- Wangxun (ngbe/txgbe):

The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes
many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by
returning an error code. However the value returned is (mostly) ignored
and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a
quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this
quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns
void.
Both ath10k platform drivers return zero unconditionally in their remove
callback, so they can be trivially converted to use .remove_new().
Also fix on of the more offending whitespace issues in the definition
of ath10k_snoc_driver.

platform_get_drvdata() cannot return NULL as the probe function calls
platform_set_drvdata() with a non-NULL argument or returns with a failure.
In the first case, platform_get_drvdata() returns this non-NULL value and
in the second the remove callback isn't called at all.
ath10k_ahb_priv() cannot return NULL and ar_ahb is unused after the check
anyhow.

Currently, on WCN3990, the station disconnect after hardware recovery is
not working as expected. This is because of setting the
IEEE80211_SDATA_DISCONNECT_HW_RESTART flag very early in the hardware
recovery process even before the driver invokes ieee80211_hw_restart().
On the contrary, mac80211 expects this flag to be set after
ieee80211_hw_restart() is invoked for it to trigger station disconnect.
Set the IEEE80211_SDATA_DISCONNECT_HW_RESTART flag in
ath10k_reconfig_complete() instead to fix this.
The other targets are not affected by this change, since the hardware
params flag is not set.

BACKGROUND
==========
When multiple work items are queued to a workqueue, their execution order
doesn't match the queueing order. They may get executed in any order and
simultaneously. When fully serialized execution - one by one in the queueing
order - is needed, an ordered workqueue should be used which can be created
with alloc_ordered_workqueue().
However, alloc_ordered_workqueue() was a later addition. Before it, an
ordered workqueue could be obtained by creating an UNBOUND workqueue with
@max_active==1. This originally was an implementation side-effect which was
broken by 4c16bd327c74 ("workqueue: restore WQ_UNBOUND/max_active==1 to be
ordered"). Because there were users that depended on the ordered execution,
5c0338c68706 ("workqueue: restore WQ_UNBOUND/max_active==1 to be ordered")
made workqueue allocation path to implicitly promote UNBOUND workqueues w/
@max_active==1 to ordered workqueues.
While this has worked okay, overloading the UNBOUND allocation interface
this way creates other issues. It's difficult to tell whether a given
workqueue actually needs to be ordered and users that legitimately want a
min concurrency level wq unexpectedly gets an ordered one instead. With
planned UNBOUND workqueue updates to improve execution locality and more
prevalence of chiplet designs which can benefit from such improvements, this
isn't a state we wanna be in forever.
This patch series audits all callsites that create an UNBOUND workqueue w/
@max_active==1 and converts them to alloc_ordered_workqueue() as necessary.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
================
The conversions are from
alloc_workqueue(WQ_UNBOUND | flags, 1, args..)
to
alloc_ordered_workqueue(flags, args...)
which don't cause any functional changes. If you know that fully ordered
execution is not ncessary, please let me know. I'll drop the conversion and
instead add a comment noting the fact to reduce confusion while conversion
is in progress.
If you aren't fully sure, it's completely fine to let the conversion
through. The behavior will stay exactly the same and we can always
reconsider later.
As there are follow-up workqueue core changes, I'd really appreciate if the
patch can be routed through the workqueue tree w/ your acks. Thanks.

Serialize the ath10k implementation of the wake_tx_queue ops.
ath10k_mac_op_wake_tx_queue() must not run concurrent since it's using
ieee80211_txq_schedule_start().
The intend of this patch is to sort out an issue discovered in the discussion
referred to by the Link tag.
I can't test it with real hardware and thus just implemented the per-ac queue
lock Felix suggested. One obvious alternative to the per-ac lock would be to
bring back the txqs_lock commit bb2edb733586 ("ath10k: migrate to mac80211 txq
scheduling") dropped.

Pull networking updates from Paolo Abeni:
"Core:
- Introduce a config option to tweak MAX_SKB_FRAGS. Increasing the
default value allows for better BIG TCP performances
- Reduce compound page head access for zero-copy data transfers
- RPS/RFS improvements, avoiding unneeded NET_RX_SOFTIRQ when
possible
- Threaded NAPI improvements, adding defer skb free support and
unneeded softirq avoidance
- Address dst_entry reference count scalability issues, via false
sharing avoidance and optimize refcount tracking
- Add lockless accesses annotation to sk_err[_soft]
- Optimize again the skb struct layout
- Extends the skb drop reasons to make it usable by multiple
subsystems
- Better const qualifier awareness for socket casts
BPF:
- Add skb and XDP typed dynptrs which allow BPF programs for more
ergonomic and less brittle iteration through data and
variable-sized accesses
- Add a new BPF netfilter program type and minimal support to hook
BPF programs to netfilter hooks such as prerouting or forward
- Add more precise memory usage reporting for all BPF map types
- Adds support for using {FOU,GUE} encap with an ipip device
operating in collect_md mode and add a set of BPF kfuncs for
controlling encap params
- Allow BPF programs to detect at load time whether a particular
kfunc exists or not, and also add support for this in light
skeleton
- Bigger batch of BPF verifier improvements to prepare for upcoming
BPF open-coded iterators allowing for less restrictive looping
capabilities
- Rework RCU enforcement in the verifier, add kptr_rcu and enforce
BPF programs to NULL-check before passing such pointers into kfunc
- Add support for kptrs in percpu hashmaps, percpu LRU hashmaps and
in local storage maps
- Enable RCU semantics for task BPF kptrs and allow referenced kptr
tasks to be stored in BPF maps
- Add support for refcounted local kptrs to the verifier for allowing
shared ownership, useful for adding a node to both the BPF list and
rbtree
- Add BPF verifier support for ST instructions in
convert_ctx_access() which will help new -mcpu=v4 clang flag to
start emitting them
- Add ARM32 USDT support to libbpf
- Improve bpftool's visual program dump which produces the control
flow graph in a DOT format by adding C source inline annotations
Protocols:
- IPv4: Allow adding to IPv4 address a 'protocol' tag. Such value
indicates the provenance of the IP address
- IPv6: optimize route lookup, dropping unneeded R/W lock acquisition
- Add the handshake upcall mechanism, allowing the user-space to
implement generic TLS handshake on kernel's behalf
- Bridge: support per-{Port, VLAN} neighbor suppression, increasing
resilience to nodes failures
- SCTP: add support for Fair Capacity and Weighted Fair Queueing
schedulers
- MPTCP: delay first subflow allocation up to its first usage. This
will allow for later better LSM interaction
- xfrm: Remove inner/outer modes from input/output path. These are
not needed anymore
- WiFi:
- reduced neighbor report (RNR) handling for AP mode
- HW timestamping support
- support for randomized auth/deauth TA for PASN privacy
- per-link debugfs for multi-link
- TC offload support for mac80211 drivers
- mac80211 mesh fast-xmit and fast-rx support
- enable Wi-Fi 7 (EHT) mesh support
Netfilter:
- Add nf_tables 'brouting' support, to force a packet to be routed
instead of being bridged
- Update bridge netfilter and ovs conntrack helpers to handle IPv6
Jumbo packets properly, i.e. fetch the packet length from
hop-by-hop extension header. This is needed for BIT TCP support
- The iptables 32bit compat interface isn't compiled in by default
anymore
- Move ip(6)tables builtin icmp matches to the udptcp one. This has
the advantage that icmp/icmpv6 match doesn't load the
iptables/ip6tables modules anymore when iptables-nft is used
- Extended netlink error report for netdevice in flowtables and
netdev/chains. Allow for incrementally add/delete devices to netdev
basechain. Allow to create netdev chain without device
Driver API:
- Remove redundant Device Control Error Reporting Enable, as PCI core
has already error reporting enabled at enumeration time
- Move Multicast DB netlink handlers to core, allowing devices other
then bridge to use them
- Allow the page_pool to directly recycle the pages from safely
localized NAPI
- Implement lockless TX queue stop/wake combo macros, allowing for
further code de-duplication and sanitization
- Add YNL support for user headers and struct attrs
- Add partial YNL specification for devlink
- Add partial YNL specification for ethtool
- Add tc-mqprio and tc-taprio support for preemptible traffic classes
- Add tx push buf len param to ethtool, specifies the maximum number
of bytes of a transmitted packet a driver can push directly to the
underlying device
- Add basic LED support for switch/phy
- Add NAPI documentation, stop relaying on external links
- Convert dsa_master_ioctl() to netdev notifier. This is a
preparatory work to make the hardware timestamping layer selectable
by user space
- Add transceiver support and improve the error messages for CAN-FD
controllers

Pull iommu updates from Joerg Roedel:
- Consolidate iommu_map/unmap functions.
There have been blocking and atomic variants so far, but that was
problematic as this approach does not scale with required new
variants which just differ in the GFP flags used. So Jason
consolidated this back into single functions that take a GFP
parameter.
- Retire the detach_dev() call-back in iommu_ops
- Arm SMMU updates from Will:
- Device-tree binding updates:
- Cater for three power domains on SM6375
- Document existing compatible strings for Qualcomm SoCs
- Tighten up clocks description for platform-specific
compatible strings
- Enable Qualcomm workarounds for some additional platforms that
need them
- Intel VT-d updates from Lu Baolu:
- Add Intel IOMMU performance monitoring support
- Set No Execute Enable bit in PASID table entry
- Two performance optimizations
- Fix PASID directory pointer coherency
- Fix missed rollbacks in error path
- Cleanups
- Apple t8110 DART support
- Exynos IOMMU:

NAPI poll can be done in threaded context along with soft irq
context. Threaded context can be scheduled efficiently, thus
creating less of bottleneck during Rx processing. This patch is
to enable threaded NAPI on ath10k driver.
Based on testing, it was observed that on WCN3990, the CPU0 reaches
100% utilization when napi runs in softirq context. At the same
time the other CPUs are at low consumption percentage. This
does not allow device to reach its maximum throughput potential.
After enabling threaded napi, CPU load is balanced across all CPUs
and following improvments were observed:
- UDP_RX increase by ~22-25%
- TCP_RX increase by ~15%
Here are some of the additional raw data with and without threaded napi:

Nathan noticed that when HWSPINLOCK is disabled there's a Kconfig warning:

ath.git patches for v6.2. Major changes:
ath10k
* store WLAN firmware version in SMEM image table
|
|
In a SoC based solution, it would be useful to know the versions of the
various binary firmware blobs the system is running on. On a QCOM based
SoC, this info can be obtained from socinfo debugfs infrastructure. For
this to work, respective subsystem drivers have to export the firmware
version information to an SMEM based version information table.
Having firmware version information at one place will help quickly
figure out the firmware versions of various subsystems on the device
instead of going through builds/logs in an event of a system crash.
Fill WLAN firmware version information in SMEM version table to be
printed as part of socinfo debugfs infrastructure on a Qualcomm based
SoC.
This change is applicable only for SNOC/QMI based targets.
Example:
cat /sys/kernel/debug/qcom_socinfo/cnss/name
QC_IMAGE_VERSION_STRING=WLAN.HL.3.2.2.c10-00754-QCAHLSWMTPL-1

if either of these is successful then ath10k_pci_init() should return 0
so that hardware attached to the successful bus can be probed and

ath.git patches for v6.2. Major changes:

* support configuring channel dwell time during scan
|
|
On WCN3990, we are seeing a rare scenario where copy engine hardware is
sending a copy complete interrupt to the host driver while still
processing the buffer that the driver has sent, this is leading into an
SMMU fault triggering kernel panic. This is happening on copy engine
channel 3 (CE3) where the driver normally enqueues WMI commands to the
firmware. Upon receiving a copy complete interrupt, host driver will
immediately unmap and frees the buffer presuming that hardware has
processed the buffer. In the issue case, upon receiving copy complete
interrupt, host driver will unmap and free the buffer but since hardware
is still accessing the buffer (which in this case got unmapped in
parallel), SMMU hardware will trigger an SMMU fault resulting in a
kernel panic.
In order to avoid this, as a work around, add a delay before unmapping
the copy engine source DMA buffer. This is conditionally done for
WCN3990 and only for the CE3 channel where issue is seen.
