SPI mem drivers should use spi_mem_set_drvdata() not spi_set_drvdata() to store their private data. 2018-05-11mtd: spi-nor: Use the spi_mem_xx() APIBoris Brezillon
The spi_mem_xxx() API has been introduced to replace the spi_flash_read() one. Make use of it so we can get rid of spi_flash_read(). Note that using spi_mem_xx() also simplifies the code because this API takes care of using the regular spi_sync() interface when the optimized ->mem_ops interface is not implemented by the controller. 2017-12-13mtd: m25p80: restore the status of SPI flash when exitingHou Zhiqiang
Restore the status to be compatible with legacy devices. Take Freescale eSPI boot for example, it copies (in 3 Byte addressing mode) the RCW and bootloader images from SPI flash without firing a reset signal previously, so the reboot command will fail without resetting the addressing mode of SPI flash. This patch implements .shutdown function to restore the status in reboot process, and add the same operation to the .remove function. 2017-05-15mtd: m25p80: add support of SPI 1-2-2 and 1-4-4 protocolsCyrille Pitchen
Before this patch, m25p80_read() supported few SPI protocols: - regular SPI 1-1-1 - SPI Dual Output 1-1-2 - SPI Quad Output 1-1-4 On the other hand, m25p80_write() only supported SPI 1-1-1. This patch updates both m25p80_read() and m25p80_write() functions to let them support SPI 1-2-2 and SPI 1-4-4 protocols for Fast Read and Page Program SPI commands. It adopts a conservative approach to avoid regressions. Hence the new implementations try to be as close as possible to the old implementations, so the main differences are: - the tx_nbits values now being set properly for the spi_transfer structures carrying the (op code + address/dummy) bytes - and the spi_transfer structure being split into 2 spi_transfer structures when the numbers of I/O lines are different for op code and for address/dummy byte transfers on the SPI bus. Besides, the current spi-nor framework supports neither the SPI 2-2-2 nor the SPI 4-4-4 protocols. So, for now, we don't need to update the m25p80_{read|write}_reg() functions as SPI 1-1-1 is the only one possible protocol. 2017-05-15mtd: spi-nor: introduce SPI 1-2-2 and SPI 1-4-4 protocolsCyrille Pitchen
This patch changes the prototype of spi_nor_scan(): its 3rd parameter is replaced by a 'struct spi_nor_hwcaps' pointer, which tells the spi-nor framework about the actual hardware capabilities supported by the SPI controller and its driver. Besides, this patch also introduces a new 'struct spi_nor_flash_parameter' telling the spi-nor framework about the hardware capabilities supported by the SPI flash memory and the associated settings required to use those hardware caps. Then, to improve the readability of spi_nor_scan(), the discovery of the memory settings and the memory initialization are now split into two dedicated functions. 1 - spi_nor_init_params() The spi_nor_init_params() function is responsible for initializing the 'struct spi_nor_flash_parameter'. Currently this structure is filled with legacy values but further patches will allow to override some parameter values dynamically, for instance by reading the JESD216 Serial Flash Discoverable Parameter (SFDP) tables from the SPI memory. The spi_nor_init_params() function only deals with the hardware capabilities of the SPI flash memory: especially it doesn't care about the hardware capabilities supported by the SPI controller. 2 - spi_nor_setup() The second function is called once the 'struct spi_nor_flash_parameter' has been initialized by spi_nor_init_params(). With both 'struct spi_nor_flash_parameter' and 'struct spi_nor_hwcaps', the new argument of spi_nor_scan(), spi_nor_setup() computes the best match between hardware caps supported by both the (Q)SPI memory and controller hence selecting the relevant settings for (Fast) Read and Page Program operations. 2015-11-19mtd: m25p80: fix module autoloading for "jedec, spi-nor" and "spi-nor"Brian Norris
Commit 43163022927b ("mtd: m25p80: allow arbitrary OF matching for "jedec,spi-nor"") moved the "jedec,spi-nor" handling from the spi_device_id table to the of_match_table, to better handle matching complex device tree compatible strings. With that patch, device tree support works as expected when m25p80.c is built into the kernel. However, that commit ignored the fact that: (1) (non-DT) platform devices might want to use the "spi-nor" string for matching with this driver, rather than picking an arbitrary one like "m25p80" (2) the core SPI uevent/modalias code doesn't yet support kernel module autoloading via of_match_table strings; so for DT-based devices, it will only report (part of) the first compatible string used Problem (1) has been reported previously, and I forgot to patch it up afterward. Problem (2) was noticed recently here: http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-mtd/2015-October/062369.html https://lkml.org/lkml/2015/11/12/574 Specifically, this patch fixes m25p80.ko module autoloading for cases like this: flash@xxx { compatible = "jedec,spi-nor"; ... }; because modalias of "spi:spi-nor" (the only module loading info provided by the SPI core for this device) will now be listed as an alias in m25p80.ko. Notably, it does *not* help cases like this: flash@xxx { compatible = "vendor,shiny-new-device", "jedec,spi-nor"; ... }; unless we also list "shiny-new-device" in m25p_ids[]. 2015-09-11mtd: spi-nor: Decouple SPI NOR's device_node from controller deviceMarek Vasut
The problem this patch is trying to address is such, that SPI NOR flash devices attached to a dedicated SPI NOR controller cannot read their properties from the associated struct device_node. A couple of facts first: 1) Each SPI NOR flash has a struct spi_nor associated with it. 2) Each SPI NOR flash has certain device properties associated with it, for example the OF property 'm25p,fast-read' is a good pick. These properties are used by the SPI NOR core to select which opcodes are sent to such SPI NOR flash. These properties are coming from spi_nor .dev->of_node . The problem is, that for SPI NOR controllers, the struct spi_nor .dev element points to the struct device of the SPI NOR controller, not the SPI NOR flash. Therefore, the associated dev->of_node also is the one of the controller and therefore the SPI NOR core code is trying to parse the SPI NOR controller's properties, not the properties of the SPI NOR flash. Note: The m25p80 driver is not affected, because the controller and the flash are the same device, so the associated device_node of the controller and the flash are the same. This patch adjusts the SPI NOR core such that the device_node is not picked from spi_nor .dev directly, but from a new separate spi_nor .flash_node element. This let's the SPI NOR controller drivers set up a different spi_nor .flash_node element for each SPI NOR flash. This patch also fixes the controller drivers to be compatible with this modification and correctly set the spi_nor .flash_node element. When we added the "jedec,spi-nor" compatible string for use in this driver, we added it as a modalias option. The modalias can be derived in different ways for platform devices vs. device tree (of_*) matching. But for device tree matching (the primary target of this identifier string), the modalias is determined from the first entry in the 'compatible' property. IOW, the following properties would bind to this driver: // Option (a), modalias = "spi-nor" compatible = "jedec,spi-nor"; // Option (b), modalias = "spi-nor" compatible = "idontknowwhatimdoing,spi-nor"; But the following would not: // Option (c), modalias = "shinynewdevice" compatible = "myvendor,shinynewdevice", "jedec,spi-nor"; So, we'd like to match (a) and (c) (even when we don't have an explicit entry for "shinynewdevice"), and we'd rather not allow (b). To do this, we (1) always (for devices without specific platform data) pass the modalias to the spi-nor library; (2) rework the spi-nor library to not reject "bad" names, and instead just fall back to autodetection; and (3) add the .of_match_table to properly catch all "jedec,spi-nor". In commit 8ff16cf77ce3 ("Documentation: devicetree: m25p80: add "nor-jedec" binding"), we added a generic "nor-jedec" binding to catch all mostly-compatible SPI NOR flash which can be detected via the READ ID opcode (0x9F). This was discussed and reviewed at the time, however objections have come up since then as part of this discussion: http://lkml.kernel.org/g/20150511224646.GJ32500@ld-irv-0074 It seems the parties involved agree that "jedec,spi-nor" does a better job of capturing the fact that this is SPI-specific, not just any NOR flash. This binding was only merged for v4.1-rc1, so it's still OK to change the naming. At the same time, let's move the documentation to a better name. Next up: stop referring to code (drivers/mtd/devices/m25p80.c) from the documentation. We had many entries that were recently added just to allow selecting some flashes directly but were never used. They weren't providing any special flash handling, we just needed them due to the lack of some generic binding string. With the introduction of "nor-jedec" (in 1103b85) they won't be needed unless we discover some faulty flash requiring workarounds. As explained in m25p80 DT documentation we require specifying "nor-jedec" now as less specific compatible entry. Use the new 'nor-jedec' binding to provide automatic detection of flash that use the 0x9F READ ID opcode. This can help for use cases where platforms just specify compatibility with "m25p80", and then see messages like this: m25p80 spi32766.0: found s25fl256s1, expected m25p80 Instead, they can just specify the generic string and see this: m25p80 spi32766.0: s25fl256s1 (32768 Kbytes) Also, update the language about m25p_ids[] to straighten out the expectations here. We should no longer need to continuously grow the m25p_ids[] table, and in fact, we might want to start removing entries which are not used in device trees so far, so we can just default to auto-detection as much as possible in the future. For the DDR Quad read, the dummy cycles maybe 3 or 6 which is less then 8. The dummy cycles is actually 8 for SPI fast/dual/quad read. This patch makes preparations for the DDR quad read, it fixes the wrong dummy value for both the spi-nor.c and m25p80.c. m25p80's device ID table is now spi_nor_ids, defined in spi-nor. The MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE() macro doesn't work with extern definitions, but its use was also removed at the same time. Now if m25p80 is built as a module it doesn't get the necessary aliases to be loaded automatically. A clean solution to this will involve defining the list of device IDs in spi-nor.h and removing struct spi_device_id from the spi-nor API, but this is quite a large change. As a quick fix suitable for stable, copy the device IDs back into m25p80. This "type" seems to be an extra hint for m25p80 about the flash. Some archs register flash_platform_data with "name" set to "m25p80" and then with a real flash name set in "type".
