2018-06-14dma-mapping: move all DMA mapping code to kernel/dmaChristoph Hellwig
Currently the code is split over various files with dma- prefixes in the lib/ and drives/base directories, and the number of files keeps growing. Move them into a single directory to keep the code together and remove the file name prefixes. To match the irq infrastructure this directory is placed under the kernel/ directory. ACPI/OF support for configuration of DMA is a bus specific aspect, and thus should be configured by the bus. Introduces a 'dma_configure' bus method so that busses can control their DMA capabilities. 2018-04-23dma-mapping: postpone cpu addr translation on mmapJacopo Mondi
Postpone calling virt_to_page() translation on memory locations not guaranteed to be backed by a struct page. Try first to map memory from the device coherent memory pool, then perform translation if that fails. On some architectures, specifically SH when configured with the SPARSEMEM memory model, assuming a struct page is always assigned to a memory address lead to unexpected hangs during the virtual to page address translation. This patch fixes that specific issue but applies in the general case too. 2017-12-07driver core: Remove redundant license textGreg Kroah-Hartman
Now that the SPDX tag is in all driver core files, that identifies the license in a specific and legally-defined manner. So the extra GPL text wording can be removed as it is no longer needed at all. This is done on a quest to remove the 700+ different ways that files in the kernel describe the GPL license text. And there's unneeded stuff like the address (sometimes incorrect) for the FSF which is never needed. No copyright headers or other non-license-description text was removed. 2017-12-07driver core: add SPDX identifiers to all driver core filesGreg Kroah-Hartman
It's good to have SPDX identifiers in all files to make it easier to audit the kernel tree for correct licenses. Update the driver core files files with the correct SPDX license identifier based on the license text in the file itself. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. 2017-09-01dma-coherent: remove the DMA_MEMORY_MAP and DMA_MEMORY_IO flagsChristoph Hellwig
DMA_MEMORY_IO was never used in the tree, so remove it. That means there is no need for the DMA_MEMORY_MAP flag either now, so remove it as well and change dma_declare_coherent_memory to return a normal errno value. 2017-07-20dma-coherent: introduce interface for default DMA poolVladimir Murzin
Christoph noticed [1] that default DMA pool in current form overload the DMA coherent infrastructure. In reply, Robin suggested [2] to split the per-device vs. global pool interfaces, so allocation/release from default DMA pool is driven by dma ops implementation. This patch implements Robin's idea and provide interface to allocate/release/mmap the default (aka global) DMA pool. To make it clear that existing *_from_coherent routines work on per-device pool rename them to *_from_dev_coherent. 2017-06-30drivers: dma-mapping: allow dma_common_mmap() for NOMMUVladimir Murzin
Currently, internals of dma_common_mmap() is compiled out if build is done for either NOMMU or target which explicitly says it does not have/want coherent DMA mmap. It turned out that dma_common_mmap() can be handy in NOMMU setup (at least for ARM). This patch converts exitent NOMMU targets to use ARCH_NO_COHERENT_DMA_MMAP, thus when CONFIG_MMU is gone from dma_common_mmap() their behaviour stays unchanged. ARM is not converted to ARCH_NO_COHERENT_DMA_MMAP because it 1) already has mmap callback which can handle (at some extent) NOMMU 2) already defines dummy pgprot_noncached() for NOMMU build. c6x and frv stay untouched since they already have ARCH_NO_COHERENT_DMA_MMAP. dma_common_contiguous_remap() The dma_common_pages_remap() function allocates a vm_struct object and initialises the pages pointer to value passed as argument. However, when this function is called dma_common_contiguous_remap(), the pages array is only temporarily allocated, being freed shortly after dma_common_contiguous_remap() returns. Architecture code checking the validity of an area->pages pointer would incorrectly dereference already freed pointers. This has been exposed by the arm64 commit 44176bb38fa4 ("arm64: Add support for DMA_ATTR_FORCE_CONTIGUOUS to IOMMU"). This is an equivalent to the DT's handling of the iommu master's probe with deferred probing when the corrsponding iommu is not probed yet. The lack of a registered IOMMU can be caused by the lack of a driver for the IOMMU, the IOMMU device probe not having been performed yet, having been deferred, or having failed. The first case occurs when the firmware describes the bus master and IOMMU topology correctly but no device driver exists for the IOMMU yet or the device driver has not been compiled in. Return NULL, the caller will configure the device without an IOMMU. The second and third cases are handled by deferring the probe of the bus master device which will eventually get reprobed after the IOMMU. The last case is currently handled by deferring the probe of the bus master device as well. A mechanism to either configure the bus master device without an IOMMU or to fail the bus master device probe depending on whether the IOMMU is optional or mandatory would be a good enhancement. devices Configuring DMA ops at probe time will allow deferring device probe when the IOMMU isn't available yet. The dma_configure for the device is now called from the generic device_attach callback just before the bus/driver probe is called. 2016-01-20dma-mapping: make the generic coherent dma mmap implementation optionalChristoph Hellwig
This series converts all remaining architectures to use dma_map_ops and the generic implementation of the DMA API. This not only simplifies the code a lot, but also prepares for possible future changes like more generic non-iommu dma_ops implementations or generic per-device dma_map_ops. This patch (of 16): We have a couple architectures that do not want to support this code, so add another Kconfig symbol that disables the code similar to what we do for the nommu case. Factor out the the remapping code from arm and put it in a common location to reduce code duplication. As part of this, the arm APIs are now migrated away from ioremap_page_range to the common APIs which use map_vm_area for remapping. This should be an equivalent change and using map_vm_area is more correct as ioremap_page_range is intended to bring in io addresses into the cpu space and not regular kernel managed memory. 2014-05-20DMA-API: Change dma_declare_coherent_memory() CPU address to phys_addr_tBjorn Helgaas
dma_declare_coherent_memory() takes two addresses for a region of memory: a "bus_addr" and a "device_addr". I think the intent is that "bus_addr" is the physical address a *CPU* would use to access the region, and "device_addr" is the bus address the *device* would use to address the region. Rename "bus_addr" to "phys_addr" and change its type to phys_addr_t. Most callers already supply a phys_addr_t for this argument. The others supply a 32-bit integer (a constant, unsigned int, or __u32) and need no change. Use "unsigned long", not phys_addr_t, to hold PFNs. No functional change (this could theoretically fix a truncation in a config with 32-bit dma_addr_t and 64-bit phys_addr_t, but I don't think there are any such cases involving this code). 2012-07-30common: dma-mapping: introduce dma_get_sgtable() functionMarek Szyprowski
This patch adds dma_get_sgtable() function which is required to let drivers to share the buffers allocated by DMA-mapping subsystem. Right now the driver gets a dma address of the allocated buffer and the kernel virtual mapping for it. If it wants to share it with other device (= map into its dma address space) it usually hacks around kernel virtual addresses to get pointers to pages or assumes that both devices share the DMA address space. Both solutions are just hacks for the special cases, which should be avoided in the final version of buffer sharing. To solve this issue in a generic way, a new call to DMA mapping has been introduced - dma_get_sgtable(). It allocates a scatter-list which describes the allocated buffer and lets the driver(s) to use it with other device(s) by calling dma_map_sg() on it. This patch provides a generic implementation based on virt_to_page() call. Architectures which require more sophisticated translation might provide their own get_sgtable() methods. Commit 9adc5374 ('common: dma-mapping: introduce mmap method') added a generic method for implementing mmap user call to dma_map_ops structure. This patch converts ARM and PowerPC architectures (the only providers of dma_mmap_coherent/dma_mmap_writecombine calls) to use this generic dma_map_ops based call and adds a generic cross architecture definition for dma_mmap_attrs, dma_mmap_coherent, dma_mmap_writecombine functions. The generic mmap virt_to_page-based fallback implementation is provided for architectures which don't provide their own implementation for mmap method. implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. Implement device resource management, in short, devres. A device driver can allocate arbirary size of devres data which is associated with a release function. On driver detach, release function is invoked on the devres data, then, devres data is freed. devreses are typed by associated release functions. Some devreses are better represented by single instance of the type while others need multiple instances sharing the same release function. Both usages are supported. devreses can be grouped using devres group such that a device driver can easily release acquired resources halfway through initialization or selectively release resources (e.g. resources for port 1 out of 4 ports).
