2022-10-02kbuild: remove head-y syntaxMasahiro Yamada
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. 2022-03-09xtensa: add kernel ABI selection to KconfigMax Filippov
Add choice to use default or call0 ABI for the kernel code. If call0 ABI is chosen add '-mabi=call0' to the flags. The toolchain support for this option is rather new so only enable it when the compiler supports it. Signed-off-by: Max Filippov <jcmvbkbc@gmail.com>
2022-03-09xtensa: don't link with libgccMax Filippov
libgcc may be absent or may have different ABI than the kernel. Don't link with it. Drop declarations and export for helpers that are not implemented. Use generic versions of DI mode multiplication and comparisons. Drop register window spilling helper as it should never be used by the compiler-generated code. 2022-01-08kbuild: do not quote string values in include/config/auto.confMasahiro Yamada
The previous commit fixed up all shell scripts to not include include/config/auto.conf. Now that include/config/auto.conf is only included by Makefiles, we can change it into a more Make-friendly form. Previously, Kconfig output string values enclosed with double-quotes (both in the .config and include/config/auto.conf): CONFIG_X="foo bar" Unlike shell, Make handles double-quotes (and single-quotes as well) verbatim. We must rip them off when used. There are some patterns: [1] $(patsubst "%",%,$(CONFIG_X)) [2] $(CONFIG_X:"%"=%) [3] $(subst ",,$(CONFIG_X)) [4] $(shell echo $(CONFIG_X)) These are not only ugly, but also fragile. [1] and [2] do not work if the value contains spaces, like CONFIG_X=" foo bar " [3] does not work correctly if the value contains double-quotes like CONFIG_X="foo\"bar" [4] seems to work better, but has a cost of forking a process. Anyway, quoted strings were always PITA for our Makefiles. This commit changes Kconfig to stop quoting in include/config/auto.conf. 2021-10-24kbuild: use more subdir- for visiting subdirectories while cleaningMasahiro Yamada
Documentation/kbuild/makefiles.rst suggests to use "archclean" for cleaning arch/$(SRCARCH)/boot/, but it is not a hard requirement. Since commit d92cc4d51643 ("kbuild: require all architectures to have arch/$(SRCARCH)/Kbuild"), we can use the "subdir- += boot" trick for all architectures. This can take advantage of the parallel option (-j) for "make clean". I also cleaned up the comments in arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile. The "archdep" target no longer exists. 2021-05-06arch: use cross_compiling to check whether it is a cross build or notMasahiro Yamada
'cross_compiling' is defined by the top Makefile and available for arch Makefiles to check whether it is a cross build or not. A good thing is the variable name 'cross_compiling' is self-documenting. This is a simple replacement for m68k, mips, sh, for which $(ARCH) and $(SRCARCH) always match. No functional change is intended for xtensa, either. This is rather a fix for parisc because arch/parisc/Makefile defines UTS_MATCHINE depending on CONFIG_64BIT, therefore cc-cross-prefix is not working in Kconfig time. 2019-11-26xtensa: add XIP kernel supportMax Filippov
XIP (eXecute In Place) kernel image is the image that can be run directly from ROM, using RAM only for writable data. XIP xtensa kernel differs from regular xtensa kernel in the following ways: - it has exception/IRQ vectors merged into text section. No vectors relocation takes place at kernel startup. - .data/.bss location must be specified in the kernel configuration, its content is copied there in the _startup function. - .init.text is merged with the rest of text and is executed from ROM. - when MMU is used the virtual address where the kernel will be mapped must be specified in the kernel configuration. It may be in the KSEG or in the KIO, __pa macro is adjusted to be able to handle both. Signed-off-by: Max Filippov <jcmvbkbc@gmail.com>

2018-10-02kbuild: consolidate Devicetree dtb build rulesRob Herring
There is nothing arch specific about building dtb files other than their location under /arch/*/boot/dts/. Keeping each arch aligned is a pain. The dependencies and supported targets are all slightly different. Also, a cross-compiler for each arch is needed, but really the host compiler preprocessor is perfectly fine for building dtbs. Move the build rules to a common location and remove the arch specific ones. This is done in a single step to avoid warnings about overriding rules. The build dependencies had been a mixture of 'scripts' and/or 'prepare'. These pull in several dependencies some of which need a target compiler (specifically devicetable-offsets.h) and aren't needed to build dtbs. All that is really needed is dtc, so adjust the dependencies to only be dtc. This change enables support 'dtbs_install' on some arches which were missing the target. 2018-08-24kbuild: rename LDFLAGS to KBUILD_LDFLAGSMasahiro Yamada
Commit a0f97e06a43c ("kbuild: enable 'make CFLAGS=...' to add additional options to CC") renamed CFLAGS to KBUILD_CFLAGS. Commit 222d394d30e7 ("kbuild: enable 'make AFLAGS=...' to add additional options to AS") renamed AFLAGS to KBUILD_AFLAGS. Commit 06c5040cdb13 ("kbuild: enable 'make CPPFLAGS=...' to add additional options to CPP") renamed CPPFLAGS to KBUILD_CPPFLAGS. For some reason, LDFLAGS was not renamed. Using a well-known variable like LDFLAGS may result in accidental override of the variable. Kbuild generally uses KBUILD_ prefixed variables for the internally appended options, so here is one more conversion to sanitize the naming convention. 2017-12-10xtensa: build kernel with text-section-literalsMax Filippov
vmlinux.lds.S doesn't do anything special with literals, so instead of keeping them separate put them into the corresponding text sections. Drop explicit .literal sections from the vmlinux.lds.S, use standard section macros. Mark literal pool locations in the assembly sources. Unfortunately assembler doesn't put literals into .init sections and external libgcc may still have .literal sections, so sed transformation to the linker script is still needed. Device trees allow specification of hardware topology and device parameters at runtime instead of hard-coding them in platform setup code. This allows running single binary kernel on a range of compatible boards. New boot parameters tag BP_TAG_FDT is allocated and a pointer to flat device tree is passed in it. Note that current interrupt mapping scheme uses single cell for interrupt identification. That means that IRQ numbers used in DTS must be CPU internal IRQ numbers, not external. It is possible to extend interrupt identification to two cells, and use second cell to tell external IRQ numbers form internal. The variable CFLAGS is a wellknown variable and the usage by kbuild may result in unexpected behaviour. On top of that several people over time has asked for a way to pass in additional flags to gcc. This patch replace use of CFLAGS with KBUILD_CFLAGS all over the tree and enabling one to use: make CFLAGS=... to specify additional gcc commandline options. One usecase is when trying to find gcc bugs but other use cases has been requested too. Patch was tested on following architectures: alpha, arm, i386, x86_64, mips, sparc, sparc64, ia64, m68k Test was simple to do a defconfig build, apply the patch and check that nothing got rebuild. 2006-12-10[PATCH] xtensa: remove extra header filesChris Zankel
The Xtensa port contained many header files that were never needed. This rather lengthy patch removes all those files. Unfortunately, there were many dependencies that needed to be updated, so this patch touches quite a few source files.
