2013-09-12arch: mm: pass userspace fault flag to generic fault handlerJohannes Weiner
Unlike global OOM handling, memory cgroup code will invoke the OOM killer in any OOM situation because it has no way of telling faults occuring in kernel context - which could be handled more gracefully - from user-triggered faults. Pass a flag that identifies faults originating in user space from the architecture-specific fault handlers to generic code so that memcg OOM handling can be improved. 2013-07-03mm: concentrate modification of totalram_pages into the mm coreJiang Liu
Concentrate code to modify totalram_pages into the mm core, so the arch memory initialized code doesn't need to take care of it. With these changes applied, only following functions from mm core modify global variable totalram_pages: free_bootmem_late(), free_all_bootmem(), free_all_bootmem_node(), adjust_managed_page_count(). With this patch applied, it will be much more easier for us to keep totalram_pages and zone->managed_pages in consistence. 2013-07-03mm: enhance free_reserved_area() to support poisoning memory with zeroJiang Liu
Address more review comments from last round of code review. 1) Enhance free_reserved_area() to support poisoning freed memory with pattern '0'. This could be used to get rid of poison_init_mem() on ARM64. 2) A previous patch has disabled memory poison for initmem on s390 by mistake, so restore to the original behavior. 3) Remove redundant PAGE_ALIGN() when calling free_reserved_area(). Commit d065bd810b6d ("mm: retry page fault when blocking on disk transfer") and 37b23e0525d3 ("x86,mm: make pagefault killable") introduced changes into the x86 pagefault handler for making the page fault handler retryable as well as killable. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2009-06-12module: trim exception table on init free.Rusty Russell
It's theoretically possible that there are exception table entries which point into the (freed) init text of modules. These could cause future problems if other modules get loaded into that memory and cause an exception as we'd see the wrong fixup. The only case I know of is kvm-intel.ko (when CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_SIZE=n). Amerigo fixed this long-standing FIXME in the x86 version, but this patch is more general. This implements trim_init_extable(); most archs are simple since they use the standard lib/extable.c sort code. Alpha and IA64 use relative addresses in their fixups, so thier trimming is a slight variation. Sparc32 is unique; it doesn't seem to define ARCH_HAS_SORT_EXTABLE, yet it defines its own sort_extable() which overrides the one in lib. It doesn't sort, so we have to mark deleted entries instead of actually trimming them. 2009-02-20vmalloc: implement vm_area_register_early()Tejun Heo
Impact: allow multiple early vm areas There are places where kernel VM area needs to be allocated before vmalloc is initialized. This is done by allocating static vm_struct, initializing several fields and linking it to vmlist and later vmalloc initialization picking up these from vmlist. This is currently done manually and if there's more than one such areas, there's no defined way to arbitrate who gets which address. This patch implements vm_area_register_early(), which takes vm_area struct with flags and size initialized, assigns address to it and puts it on the vmlist. This way, multiple early vm areas can determine which addresses they should use. The only current user - alpha mm init - is converted to use it. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org>

2008-02-07Introduce flags for reserve_bootmem()Bernhard Walle
This patchset adds a flags variable to reserve_bootmem() and uses the BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE flag in crashkernel reservation code to detect collisions between crashkernel area and already used memory. This patch: Change the reserve_bootmem() function to accept a new flag BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE. If that flag is set, the function returns with -EBUSY if the memory already has been reserved in the past. This is to avoid conflicts. Because that code runs before SMP initialisation, there's no race condition inside reserve_bootmem_core(). One of the easiest things to isolate is the pid printed in kernel log. There was a patch, that made this for arch-independent code, this one makes so for arch/xxx files. 2007-10-19pid namespaces: define is_global_init() and is_container_init()Serge E. Hallyn
is_init() is an ambiguous name for the pid==1 check. Split it into is_global_init() and is_container_init(). A cgroup init has it's tsk->pid == 1. A global init also has it's tsk->pid == 1 and it's active pid namespace is the init_pid_ns. But rather than check the active pid namespace, compare the task structure with 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper', which is initialized during boot to the /sbin/init process and never changes. Changelog: 2.6.22-rc4-mm2-pidns1: - Use 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper' to determine if a given task is the global init (/sbin/init) process. This would improve performance and remove dependence on the task_pid(). 2.6.21-mm2-pidns2: - [Sukadev Bhattiprolu] Changed is_container_init() calls in {powerpc, ppc,avr32}/traps.c for the _exception() call to is_global_init(). This way, we kill only the cgroup if the cgroup's init has a bug rather than force a kernel panic. 2007-10-16During VM oom condition, kill all threads in process groupWill Schmidt
We have had complaints where a threaded application is left in a bad state after one of it's threads is killed when we hit a VM: out_of_memory condition. Killing just one of the process threads can leave the application in a bad state, whereas killing the entire process group would allow for the application to restart, or be otherwise handled, and makes it very obvious that something has gone wrong. This change allows the entire process group to be taken down, rather than just the one thread. This patch completes Linus's wish that the fault return codes be made into bit flags, which I agree makes everything nicer. 2006-09-29[PATCH] pidspace: is_init()Sukadev Bhattiprolu
This is an updated version of Eric Biederman's is_init() patch. (http://lkml.org/lkml/2006/2/6/280). It applies cleanly to 2.6.18-rc3 and replaces a few more instances of ->pid == 1 with is_init(). Further, is_init() checks pid and thus removes dependency on Eric's other patches for now. Eric's original description: There are a lot of places in the kernel where we test for init because we give it special properties. Most significantly init must not die. This results in code all over the kernel test ->pid == 1. Introduce is_init to capture this case. With multiple pid spaces for all of the cases affected we are looking for only the first process on the system, not some other process that has pid == 1. Signed-off-by: Eric W. 2006-03-27[PATCH] unify PFN_* macrosDave Hansen
Just about every architecture defines some macros to do operations on pfns. They're all virtually identical. This patch consolidates all of them. One minor glitch is that at least i386 uses them in a very skeletal header file. To keep away from #include dependency hell, I stuck the new definitions in a new, isolated header. Of all of the implementations, sh64 is the only one that varied by a bit. It used some masks to ensure that any sign-extension got ripped away before the arithmetic is done. This has been posted to that sh64 maintainers and the development list. Compiles on x86, x86_64, ia64 and ppc64. 2005-10-29[PATCH] memory hotplug locking: node_size_lockDave Hansen
pgdat->node_size_lock is basically only neeeded in one place in the normal code: show_mem(), which is the arch-specific sysrq-m printing function. Strictly speaking, the architectures not doing memory hotplug do no need this locking in show_mem(). However, they are all included for completeness. This should also make any future consolidation of all of the implementations a little more straightforward. This lock is also held in the sparsemem code during a memory removal, as sections are invalidated. This is the place there pfn_valid() is made false for a memory area that's being removed. The lock is only required when doing pfn_valid() operations on memory which the user does not already have a reference on the page, such as in show_mem(). 2005-10-29[PATCH] mm: init_mm without ptlockHugh Dickins
First step in pushing down the page_table_lock. init_mm.page_table_lock has been used throughout the architectures (usually for ioremap): not to serialize kernel address space allocation (that's usually vmlist_lock), but because pud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel expect caller holds it. Reverse that: don't lock or unlock init_mm.page_table_lock in any of the architectures; instead rely on pud_alloc,pmd_alloc,pte_alloc_kernel to take and drop it when allocating a new one, to check lest a racing task already did. Similarly no page_table_lock in vmalloc's map_vm_area. Some temporary ugliness in __pud_alloc and __pmd_alloc: since they also handle user mms, which are converted only by a later patch, for now they have to lock differently according to whether or not it's init_mm. If sources get muddled, there's a danger that an arch source taking init_mm.page_table_lock will be mixed with common source also taking it (or neither take it). So break the rules and make another change, which should break the build for such a mismatch: remove the redundant mm arg from pte_alloc_kernel (ppc64 scrapped its distinct ioremap_mm in 2.6.13). Exceptions: arm26 used pte_alloc_kernel on user mm, now pte_alloc_map; ia64 used pte_alloc_map on init_mm, now pte_alloc_kernel; parisc had bad args to pmd_alloc and pte_alloc_kernel in unused USE_HPPA_IOREMAP code; ppc64 map_io_page forgot to unlock on failure; ppc mmu_mapin_ram and ppc64 im_free took page_table_lock for no good reason. 2005-06-23[PATCH] remove non-DISCONTIG use of pgdat->node_mem_mapDave Hansen
This patch effectively eliminates direct use of pgdat->node_mem_map outside of the DISCONTIG code. On a flat memory system, these fields aren't currently used, neither are they on a sparsemem system. There was also a node_mem_map(nid) macro on many architectures. Its use along with the use of ->node_mem_map itself was not consistent. It has been removed in favor of two new, more explicit, arch-independent macros: pgdat_page_nr(pgdat, pagenr) nid_page_nr(nid, pagenr) I called them "pgdat" and "nid" because we overload the term "node" to mean "NUMA node", "DISCONTIG node" or "pg_data_t" in very confusing ways. I believe the newer names are much clearer. These macros can be overridden in the sparsemem case with a theoretically slower operation using node_start_pfn and pfn_to_page(), instead. We could make this the only behavior if people want, but I don't want to change too much at once. One thing at a time. This patch removes more code than it adds. Compile tested on alpha, alpha discontig, arm, arm-discontig, i386, i386 generic, NUMAQ, Summit, ppc64, ppc64 discontig, and x86_64. 2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
